Secondary Cat Delete Suggestions/Frustrations

Need a group-think on my current situation.

After reading an enormous amount of threads, I decided to move forward with having the secondary cats deleted.
I researched local shops online, called, and stopped in to talk to several. I landed on one here in town that had good reviews and seemed experienced. We setup an appointment, and I dropped the car off today.

While dropping it off, I started chatting with one of the employees. He explained that they had to drop the exhaust to perform the job. I've read MANY reviews of folks who say the exhaust did not have to be dropped, so I found this odd. I poked at the idea, and they said it needed to be done so that they could get a good weld around the straight pipe they insert. Okay, that's fine. No worries there.

So my wife & I leave without pricing info and are waiting on a call after they get under the car. They call after about an hour, and tell me that the down-pipes need to be removed to cut the secondary cats out. I'm not very mechanically inclined (I always make up for it through research), but I have not seen one person insist that DP's must be removed to delete the secondary cats.

Can someone who has experience with this give me insight? I am not doing a $2,500 DP job right now. I just want the dang secondary cats deleted..
Any recommendations of shops in GA that can do the delete?

Thanks for your help.

I understand how one could get a better weld by dropping the exhaust, but its by no means necessary.

That was my thought as well. They won’t do the job without dropping both exhaust and DPs. I’m going to pick the car up now. I’m most interested in hearing thoughts on having to drop the down pipes?

Hmmm...not sure what to think because like you I have seen post where it sounded like the Secondary cats were removed and straight pipe welded in without removing the DP's.

However, I will tell you that the shop I am working with...said that if I wanted to have my secondary cats replaced, they would drop the DP's in order to be able to do the weld correctly. This is a very reputable speed shop here in town and he said it would cost around $800 to do it correctly.

So I thought about it and decided to go with Catless DP's and a tune for 3 reasons as follows:
1) More HP
2) Sounds friggin amazing
3) Have my full stock DP's if I ever want to go back to stock

Just the way I did it...Good Luck with whatever you decide!

This isn't performance muffler right? You're talking about an actual speed shop like goodspeed or dyno-comp?

Correct...it was GoodSpeed who said to do it this way. Not sure how Performance Muffler would handle it because I never spoke to them about this?

You don't have to drop the entire exhaust that's just ridiculous. As far as removing the stock DPs to do a proper weld... I can see why they would want to do that because of what a pain in the *** it was to cut the secondary cat's. I did it on my back on jackstands with a sawzall, but I can see it being done easier with a small cutting disc.
I don't think the shop was trying to screw you over, I just think they've never done a cat delete on a C63, so maybe they didn't want to quote you something when they thought more was involved.

I think you’re right. I want to accentuate that the shop is very reputable. It’s a performance shop (probably the best for EU cars) here in town. I didn’t think they were trying to screw me.. was just curious to know whether I’m crazy in expecting someone to be able to do this with the exhaust still on the car.

No you're not crazy to think it can be done without removing the exhaust, especially the h pipe and back.

I did this a while back when I first got the car. I have the performance exhaust if that matters. My shop in Los Angeles did it for 100 dollars and they never had to drop the exhaust or downpipes. They literally got a saw and chopped them right off and welded a straight pipe while my car was on the lift. You need to find those muffler shops in the ghetto areas because they don't care about regulations and such.

Fair enough! Going to have to search for a hole in the wall muffler shop.

And you'll get a lousy hole-in-the-wall job done.... Careful.

Just ask to look at their welds.

yeah i got my stock mufflers cut and rewelded a PE on my 335 at some random shop, the weld jobs were terrible near the top. A year later i had a shop re cut it and just used clamps

Some shops do a really good jogood their welds. When I put longtubes and an offroad x pipe on my 2015 5.0 the first welds were so bad. It literally looked like peanuts. The x pipe ended up breaking in half so I took it to another shop and asked to see some of their welds. They were pretty good so I ended up having them do the work and the welds never gave.
So some shops are good and others are not, just look at their work and you'll be able to tell right away.

Did my '19 a few months back for $250, they didn't have to drop the exhaust.
