FIXED!! 2021 63S rattle by rear view mirror / camera

Has anyone else experienced a rattle / vibration in and around the rear view mirror / glass mounted camera area? I've had it since the car was new and it's to the point that it's pissing me off. I did ask MB to look into it while the car was in for first service and they did the typical two guys take it for a ride routine and said "yeah we definitely hear it but will take some time to figure out what / where the issue is". I saw them banging on the dash and center console with their hands and that was the end of it. Long story short, I wasn't about to let them tear into the car for a week without doing some further research.
Hoping someone might have had a similar experience, or perhaps there/s even a TSB that's out there for it - any help would be appreciated - uneven roads, small bumps, etc no matter the suspension or mode setting and it rattles away. (and yes, I turn up the radio!)

Thanks for any input!

I had the same rattle issue by the rear view mirror on my 2019 C63s coupe,( purchased new in April 2019.
Don't remember when it developed but in May 2020 the Dealership applied Special MB Lubricant to the Panoramic roof seals. At this time I was not able to leave the car. Soon after the rattled came back.
In June 2020 I left the car at a different Dealership and they lubricated the sunroof area again and replaced the right front door seal which they said was deformed
I believed it corrected the rattle for some time but with the poor road conditiond these rattles come and go.
At the time it bothered me also. I realized when I opened the sunroof cracked or fully opened the rattle was gone. Who knows?.
The 2 photos below show what work was done to correct the rattle.

I know this is going to seem silly, but in the event you haven't already thought of this make sure you don't have any sunglasses in the sunglasses holder. Any time I forget to take mine out of there before driving off, I'll hear a rattle. The second I take them out, it's gone.

Thanks for the input guys - I had thought the sunroof track (etc) could also be the culprit and yes, no sunglasses in the holder I am going to do a few tests today with the sunroof open on roads I know to be rattle happy and see if there is any difference with the roof open. I don't believe there is any issue with the door seals, the rattle is definitely above the rear view mirror area, but exactly what is making the noise is unknown - I really think it originates from inside the black box that houses the sensors (above / behind the mirror)

Yes. That's exactly where I believed the rattle was coming from the black box above/behind rear view mirror back in 2020.I even put my iphone next to this box to record the rattle sound and did have the SA listen but the recording was not a true indications of the rattle.
I asked about replacing the black box but the MB as I remember used felt in certain area around this box. That particular rattle seem to have been fixed .
Regarding this issue, when I brought the car in the SA set up a test drive with the AMG Tech to highlight where the rattle was coming from. He drove with me in passenger seat. Also he said the car was performing in top condition so if you or AMG Tech have any other issues or concerns how your car is performing that's the time to bring it up. I would suggest you set up a test ride with the Dealership AMG Tech.

I once drove over a bumpy road, the plastic cover that was around the mirror and the camera just broke off and fell down (during the time before that, whenever i clean the car i see small damaged pieces that i didnt know where it came from but now i do) so i just ordered a brand new one around 20$ from the dealer. not sure if it could help you but that was my case.. maybe it comes weak in facelift cars.

Had the exact same issue of rattling from the same rear view mirror area on my 21 c63s. Bugged me to no end and I thought it was the sunglass holder, which is a bit flimsy. But the rattle occurred with or without glasses in the holder. I finally ended up disconnecting and removing the upper console and found a couple of wiring harnesses that power the mirror, rain sensors, etc. that had a fair amount of play in them. From there I put a few thin layers of sound deadening material in areas that had play in the wiring harnesses as well as in areas that the plastic housing that was touching the top of the console. That did the trick in my case.

Now if I can only figure out the sunroof rattle that disappears when it’s tilted or open…

Hope it’s something simple and you get it sorted out.

That's the only rattle I had from that area. I got some self-adhesive black felt on Amazon, cut it to the right shape and lined the inside of the sunglass holder. I can now leave my sunglasses up there w/o rattling around.

I had my dealership address a couple of rattles during the first service. They did something to the pano roof and found a loose clip in the A-pillar. Rattles have mostly been gone since then. I have an intermittent one coming from the center display area when the car is cold, but it goes away once things have warmed up. Occasionally I put some pressure on the center console, which seems to release tension that's built up from the constant expansion and contraction. Seems to make a difference. It's pretty much impossible to get rid of all rattles and creaks in a firmly sprung and stiff car. It's the nature of the beast. Even the AMG GT is known to creak and rattle and that car is handbuilt. My previous car creaked and rattled more than my C63. At least the frameless windows are quiet on this one. With my RS5 I had a supply of Gummipflege to keep those seals from squeaking constantly.

Great info! I haven't considered taking apart (or removing to inspect) the camera housing - - what's involved taking it down? If it's not a big deal I would much rather do it myself than have the dealer take an entire day of it. I also agree - the sunroof frame or mechanism may be an issue as well, but not nearly as bad as my camera housing - which honestly isn't the worst, just something I would like to correct.

Cheers,
Dan

Hey Dan, I couldn’t locate the instructions I previously used, but this video is very close to the technique needed.

I hope this helps!

Well MB efficiently took the upper console and camera housing apart, insulated everything with felt and reinstalled --- the noise isn't fixed. I should've asked them to do more investigating but you know how that goes - I don't have a week to wait.

I did some more looking and found a possible lead with this video, in the comments he states:

"In the end, after Mercedes spending 4 weeks with the car and taking the dash completely apart, it ended up being the bolts that attach the upper x-brace. They put a lubrication on the bolts and tightened them per spec. I was told there is a little-known issue where certain temperatures and conditions cause these bolts to "creak" or "pop" and that was the noise. I haven't had a since incidence of this since"

I would take a look at these bolts but I have no idea what the upper x-brace is on my car (I'm thinking engine bay brace?)

I have a less obvious, but similar noise in the same area as that video and it seems to somewhat go away when it's hot out, which kind of lines up with the comment above as well. Would also like to know where this upper x-brace is.

FIXED!

The below video is exactly the noise I hear -- I took the center speaker cover off, loosened the two T20 screws that mount the screen (oh have fun!) - unplugged two screen connectors and investigated. I found that the circular plug taps on the base of the screen (metal to metal) and that the upper portion of the metal box the screen slides into showed signs of interference. I taped the two wires to assure they had some cushion, added a velcro strip to the top metal edge and also where the two wires plug into the back of the screen -- re-assembled, no more tick tick tick!

Thank you this helped me big time. I didn't get the rattling thing until shortly after replacing the windshield. Looked at the YouTube procedure to remove the cover and found a wire harness that was vibrating on the cover from the inside. I cut out a piece thin foam insulation sandwiched between the wire harness and the plastic housing. Save me a trip to the Dealer to solve. Cheers
