Hi everyone. I accidentally curbed my front passenger side wheel and need some advice on if I need to get a new tire or not - I am getting the rim fixed so not concerned about that. I got these new summer tires installed about 2 weeks ago and don't drive much so swapping in a single new tire shouldn't be an issue. There is a large chunk of rubber missing from the sidewall, but it appears the chunk of rubber is just the protective lip, so more like cosmetic damage versus structural damage to the side wall. Do I need to replace the tire? Uploaded a few pictures below. Any and all comments would be greatly appreciated.

Generally if you can't see the nylon threads where the sidewall damage is, and there is no bubble, the tire is ok.

Be prepared for disappointment on the wheel repair. All they are going to do is lathe material off the wheel until the rash is gone. From a distance, it will look ok but close up, it sucks. Biggest issue when they remove material off that area is the nice AMG logo area gets ground down and does not look legit anymore. This is a forged wheel and you cannot add material back to it before putting on on the lathe. Said another way, it will not be the same as the other wheels. For me, that was not OK. Not trying to be negative but I had the wheel and tire package and I insisted they replace the wheel as they needed to put it back the way is was. YMMV

^^ I can vouch for that. Those repairs suck. They basically just grind off material and blend paint. From a distance it can pass but otherwise not to me. Although some places do a better job then others. No way I'd live with that tire even if there is nothing wrong with it structurally. It stands out pretty good like an unwanted pimple.

If your tire isn't losing abnormal amounts of air and you're not regularly pushing really fast speeds/corners then I think mechanically it is okay.

If you really want to replace your rims, you might try seeing how much someone is willing to pay for stock AMG rims, because I know people who don't have AMG's really love them. You could then use that money to buy aftermarket rims and tires.

Hey Paul your tire is definitely fine and the curb is not even that bad I've done way worse in my coupe taken a big chunk out of my tire deeper than that in the past on the Pilot Super Sports drove on them for a good 10,000 or more miles. That curb rash is an easy fix and will look as good as new if you ever decide to fix it up.

For now you can just wash the car and continue driving it until your next tire change no stress 🙂

Grab a 4-6" file and use the flat smoother side and gently file down all the rough areas on and around the lip, then grab a 500+ grit sandpaper block and go back over it until it is as smooth as you can get it(don't scratch up the tires). It will be hardly noticeable from 20" out. Use a black paint marker to dab any marks on the black surface if you choose.

Ya but those are nice wheels plus it is not structurally damage I think only cosmetically. I would hate to give up on them so soon.
