Tried 100 Octane Unleaded in my 600

Hey what's up everyone,

The other day I was driving by a gas station by my home, and saw a sign for Racing Fuel. The gas station was Clark's; I usually purchase my gasoline from Shell, BP, and etc., but today I decided to experiment with 100 octane. I spoke with the attendant and he told me to mix the gas with one half 93 and the other with 100 octane. So I put roughly 11 gallons of each in my CL. The rest is history! It was like Red Bull for my car. The engine became much more responsive and sounded beautiful. I had to take it on the highway. I was zooming. Anyway, what is your take on putting 100 octane and how often. I'm a bit reluctant to put it in every time because of some reservations. I know that premium gas is expected, but is this too much? By the way, it cost $6.00/gallon.

It will actually decrease yor power unless your ECU can advance the timing to use that extra octane/detonation resistant fuel. In a 2003 CL, you could re-map the ECU to take advantage of the extra octane and make huge power but it would probably not matter in a stock engine with the stock ECU and would probably decrease power.

Your engine is tuned to work with a certain octane rating, probably 91 or 92 octane. Anything less and you will have the timing retarded by detonation and make less power and anything more you are wasting your money and producing less power. Higher octane will help you resist detonation but the fuel has less energy than lower octane fuel so you must advance the timing or raise the boost to make more power.

wait, so higher octane than 93 is useless?

It depends on how much of an adjustment your ECU is able to make or how a car is tuned.

$6/gallon X 11 = $66
$3/gallon X 11 = $33
Are you saying it cost you $100 to fill up? Ouch!

$6.00/gallon is CHEAP for 100 octane fuel.

I have seen it for $7.55, but have never bought it. In the late 1960's 100 octane was routinely available. That was premium in those days. Chevron used to call it "Custom." I remeber buying it for about $0.38/gallon for my 1969 Mustang Boss 302.

I was getting 100 octane for a little less than $5.00/gallon in Mundelein (corner of 60/83). They are selling it for $5.50/gallon now.

It's a definite improvement on my forced induction car, I'm guessing it might also improve your 2002. The performance improvements have nothing to do with "ignition advance" or detonation effects. I'll let the naysayers figure it out on their own.

How often is basically a matter of what you can afford and if you really notice a benefit. I gave up on the whole thing because on a percentage basis, I don't get to enjoy it that often.

$.38/gallon?!?!? I know you're an old schooler (like me)! I remember those 40 cent days....and the gas shortage when we had to leave our car in line overnight (24 hour gas stations were non-existent then) so we'd have a place in line when the station opened in the morning!
