One of my front rims cracked today.
I thought it was a nail in the tire and took it into a local tire shop. I was shocked when i got a phone call from them telling me that the Rim had actually cracked. They told me that this could have been due to cold weather (gets to about 8-10 here) and the salt on the road. both of these factors make the rim more brittle, hence easier to crack. I am going to call Renntech and ask them if this is true. Has anyone else had this happen?

The more expensive & lighter the wheel...the more trouble it is.
Good wheel shops fix bends and cracks in wheels all the time. I would try to repair it even if it were to keep as a spare.

well i
called my insurance company. the wheel is $1395+shipping. and my other 3 wheel's clearcoats are coming off due to road salt. to refinish those it will be another $500. i think i rather pay my $500 deductable than to pay $2k out of pocket. hopefully insurance will cover aftermarket wheels, otherwise i will have to tell them that they came with the car when i purchased it.

When I purchased my car it had 20" BBS wheels on it, as soon as I found the original forged wheels for it I made a purchase and sold the BBS.
I think the BBS are good but you can't beat the original tested and true wheels.

i thought it was the other way around
the factory puts the cheapest wheels on the car to make it more affordable. aftermarket manufacturers make lighter stronger wheels for increased performance. someone tell me if ive been misled.

so geico called me back today
They are replacing all 4 rims because the adjuster on site deemed them to be "Unroadworthy" they are also replacing 2 front tires, a bumper, splash guard and other misc parts. All that for 1 cracked rim. I must say that i am a happy man today. i didnt even know that the bumper was cracked.

Ok So I Got My Car Back Last Thurs
I must say that the roads in Chicago S U C K. I managed to hit another pothole on a freeway overpass of all places. 2 more rims bent. I am seriously wondering one of 2 things.
1. Renntech Rims are weak (which completely goes against my thought on forged rims)
2. No rim on the face of the planet is a match for a pothole in Chicago.

Man, I feel your pain. Last summer, I had my 20' Lowenhart LDRs crack when I was driving on I-294 South towards downtown from the burbs. The funny thing is that i didn't even notice it at first when a limo driver at the tollboth told me my front passenger tire was flat (ContinentalContiExtreme). Luckily, I got off on the Cumberland exit and called MB Tele-Aid and they put the ugly 17 inch full size spare. Chicago roads are the worst anywhere!!!!! That's why I'm flying south. Anyway, if you continue to stay in Chicago, all season tires are a must, don't get 20s (I was too eager and didn't know better), and avoid I-294 N/S. 90 East is MUCH better now. 355 and 290 are descent. Daley and Blagoevich need to fix all those damn potholes with all that money they'are makin' from IPASS. Scoundrels!

I have geico as well and I've been holding off doing major overhauls on the car because I'm scared to as what might happen during a problem.

was actually pretty nice about it. found me a bodyshop like a mile away. Total damage was about $6k so i rather pay the $500 deductable.

this is a little sad and pathetic but this is how much i love luxury cars...
i live in atlanta, georgia and it is not so bad (quality of life). i've lived in new york, los angeles, and nashville but i've ended up here somehow. anyway, our roads are great (except for downtown), pretty smooth overall. subconsciously i think the reason why i have not moved to boston or miami (which i both love) is because i wanted to enjoy smooth cruising in my car. i want the driving experience to be perfect in a way. squeaks, rattles, chips, dings, salt, potholes, curb rash, etc. are all absolute intolerables to me. sad but true, i think i refuse to live in a city where there is excellent public transportation and really rough roads. sad.

Just cracked my 20s HRE. also managed to bent the other side at the same time. So both rear wheels are at the shop now. was quoted $330 for each inner hoops., but I'm sure Id get them cheaper or worse yet spend $100 each and have them fixed. Not too bad I guess considering otherwise I'd have to buy new wheels if I had them one-piece forged.
But hey, my loaner wheels are from CLS55 and I kind like them... 255 and 285 Pirelli P-Zero stock anyways which are more less the same as my 255, 295 Michelin PS2 anyways.. .except now I got more meat!
