Please help! Rear wheels won't clear caliper!

Please help, guys.

I've recently acquired a set of chrome 20' Symbolic 3 piece SL-27 wheels. The fronts are 8.5 and the rears are 9.5 wide. They're mounted with 245/35/20 Falkens on the front and 275/35/20 on the rear.

As I was told, these wheels and tires came off a 2006' S500.

When I took the rims and tires to a local tire shop, they were able to mount them on my 2000' W215 CL500, even though it was somewhat of a tight fit. However, as soon as they lowered the car and backed up, Ka Bang! The rear calipers struck the rims without mercy.

I really like these rims and would like to make them fit on my car. The seller has been very confident that my car should not have any problems with these rims/tires.

Could anyone please help as to what I should do? Do I need spacers? New lugs/bolts?

Please help! I am now driving around with two 20' inch rims in the front and 2 18' AMG monoblocks in the rear. Gawd I look like someone with a Reentech twin turbo CL65 that just came back from a drag strip!

Thanks in advance!

Jon

PS. I am sorry that I am double posting this tread in two forums, I really would like to get this issue resolved as soon as possible. Thanks again!

For those of you who are curious, this is how the wheels look like:

Is your car a CL500? If so, I can't imagine you would need a very big spacer to clear the calipers. Can you see how much space you need?

The 2003 and later 55's and 600's have huge rear calipers and are difficult to clear but the 500 shouldn't be much of an issue.

Just have them measure how much clearance you need for the caliper and put on a hub-centric spacer.

Also make sure your current lugs are the correct length... well it is a bit late for that now so just check for damage to your spindles... the tire shop screwed mine up, as my factory bolts were too long for the new rims.

CL500 and ML55
You will need spacers to increase the offset if they came off an SL.
The SLs wheels have less offset than CLs do. If you use an offset you will need longer wheel bolts also.
S class and CL class take the same wheels -except - I think the AMG cars require additional offset for the larger calipers they come equipped with.

Your wheels either came off an SL or you have other than std CL500 brakes..

Thanks guys!

I appreciate all the help.

The funny thing is, these wheels really have come off a S-class (2006' S500 to be specific) according to the seller, who is actually stunned by the fact that the rear wheels would not fit on my 2000' CL500. Unless there's an after market brake system that simply has no logo on it, my rear brake caliper looks plain black and does not appear to have been altered.

Is there a possibility that at one point(s) during the CL and S production, offsets were changed?

I just checked the inner portion of the Symbolic rear wheel and saw a scratch close to the center of the wheel. I am assuming that it's probably the caliper that caused this damage.

My mechanic recommended a 5mm to 10mm spacer from H&R for me. He said it will help the wheel fit on the car, but will push the wheel very close to the fender.

Here's my other concern. Given the fact that my CL always sinks (ABC problem?) by at least 3-4 inches when not driven for a few weeks, would the car literally "sit on" the wheels, causing unexpected damages?

Typically, when the sinking problem occurs, I simply can shift in gear and move the car for an inch or so and the car will lift itself back to its original position. I wonder if the same could be done with these 20' wheels.

It depends. When they first dropped the car down, how much space was there between the side of the tire wall/front of the wheel to the fender?

A 5-10mm H&R spacer shouldn't push the sidewalls out so far that it is past the fender, unless it was super close to the fender already (which I'd doubt if it wasn't clearing the caliper.

Thanks again, guys.

My problem is finally resolved. I went with a pair of H&R 5mm spacers in the back and now the wheels fit just fine, even though they're literally lined up with the fenders.

I did buy a set of H &R 10mm spacers just to see what difference it would make and unfortunately, the retailer would not accept any refund since one of the spacers was test fitted on my car.

I would be more than happy to see the H&R 10mm spacers, which are practically brand new, for $90.
