Coil Pack and cylinder misfiring

Went to the stealership today and I was thinking I had a problem with the oxygen sensors. Unfortunately, it turns out to be something else...my coil pack needs to be replaced and at least 6 of my cylinders are misfiring. So, I'm letting my car chill and thinking about what to do, besides selling it. They quoted me $2600 with labor. I can get the part cheaper at various websites. The labor can't be $1000, that's retarded. Anyone familiar with the coil pack problem?

I had both sides on my CL replaced. It was crazy expensive.

It was close to $3,000/side with labor. F-N highway robbery.

Mis-firing symtoms

I think I have this problem

At about 80 MPH or so, it feels like a heartbeat (fast) or like there is something on a tire (sounds from the passenger side of car). One time, the car almost died; I had to stop and chill for a minute then it went away. Happens every now and then but not like that. Is what I am describing a mis-fire?

Either way, I have warranty and if it is, I am taking it back.

Wow, a real coincidence... It's been forever since I've been on the forum and came here to mention the same problem.

My car is 2001 CL600. A few weeks ago, the check engine light came on a moment after I started the car. The engine/exhaust sounded a little "thoaty" to me, but I took the car out anyway. I didn't even get off my block, because I could tell the engine had much less power - so I put it back in the driveway. The next day, I started it, the negine light stayed on, but the car ran fine. 5 starts later, the light went off.

A few days later, the same thing happened, and then after that with more frequency. I took it to the dealer - the failure codes were O2 sensors and cylinders 7-12 (left side of the car) had misfired. He suspected a clogged cat, checked it out, found nothing. So he said it must be the coil pack.

Is your car under any warranty? THANK GOD I had renewed my aftermarket warranty, which had just expired after its initial 2 years on July 13. I took the car in today to have it repaired, no charge (aside from the 700 bucks for the extra year on the warranty).

I was told the coil pack itself is in the $1500 range, plus labor would cost about $2200. (Long Island, NY prices)

I will post again when I get it back. Good luck with your car!

My B Service is in about 5000 miles, I am going to have them look at all of that while it is there. This car is bad but boy is it bad.

This coil-pack problem seems to be reoccurring every two years. You're lucky because you're still under warranty. I'm going to get this fixed and park it in the garage. I might change the 02 sensors to avoid any unnecessary check engine light.

I don't think its and every 2 year problem. My car was close to 5 years old before they needed replacement. Maybe the older ones are more problematic?

i dont know if taht make sense, ur gonna have it fixed then just park it? why dont you go get a warranty that will cover that and everything esles, then just park it for a month till the warranty kicks in, then have it fixed? that way u spent the same amount of money, and if anything else happens, ur straight?

right?

Warranty

I inquired at several Mercedes-Benz dealerships in-state as well as out-of-state and they all gave me a ridiculous price for the warranty (in the $8000 ballpark). The money wasn't an issue as much as the type of warranty they offered. There were too many aspects which they did not cover, which makes sense because as this vehicle tends to accrue miles, it also accrues problems. Also, no one wanted to cover the car for more than 2 years. My warranty, which I purchased at the time of buying my coupe, was for the maximum amount of mileage they offered. Unfortunately, it ran out earlier this year. My point is, if there was a thorough warranty available to me, I would purchase it in a heartbeat. Now it's too late and no one's offering to warranty my vehicle and this includes aftermarket, etc. So, for however long I plan to keep this automobile, I will have to burden the cost and I don't mind because it was a conscientious and thought-out choice to buy a CL (which stands for coupe lang--German for large/long bodied coupe as opposed to CLK, in which the "K" means kurz, short bodied). Off-topic but FYI.

how , many miels u got on it. check into Great Lakes Warranty group, they have that unlimited mile stuff, might be worth the gamble?

cheaper the coughin it up ur self, and i think if u take it to a good "non-dealer" mech, u can get a better deal, or even slide a dealers mechanic some loot on the side for some at home work

Got my CL600 back today with a brand spankin' new left-side coil pack. Dang, those things are HUGE when you see them out from under the hood!

The warranty I have is through "Prizm Administrative Solutions" and cost me about $1400 two years ago. They did the 1-year extention for 700 bucks so I made the easy choice to do it.

I'm SURE you can find one for less than 8 grand. That's ridiculous.

Thanks

Thanks Ali and Vendetta for your recommendation. I emailed both warranty companies today and am going to find out more about what possible stipulations their coverage has. I recently moved to Arkansas, and there are no non-dealer mechanics here that can work on my car. The one mechanic that I did find said that the does not work on V12 engines anymore due to lack of equipment and liability purposes. I'm s.o.l so I had to go to the local Benz dealership. I appreciate your help.
