CL500 spark plugs - where and what?
Hi all,
Well the stealership reckons I need 16 sparks and has quoted me for CHAMPION part number KC11PYP - £104+VAT
Now I may be wrong but I thought CHAMPION were cheap plugs?!?! Id prefer Bosch or something really - esp at £104 + VAT.
Ive found it hard to get definate details on what plugs I can use but I have the list below so far:
Champion KC11PYP
NGK PFR5G-11
Bosch F8DPER
Cheapest for Bosch was GSFcarparts.com @ £84 all in.
Do you guys know of any other sparks? and where to get them at good prices online in the UK?
If you know any good websites + good sparks that fit CL500 2000 V8 then please bombard me with details.
On another note - MB said the engine oil is 5W 40 Shell Helix - wanted a bloody fortune for it - went to shell petrol station and got 10litres for £72 + a free Top Gear magazine :0 - thought that was good until I saw 20 litres on eBay for £80!! just dont know if I'd trust buying off eBay though

As far as what plugs it takes, check this site out:
http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/se...ercedes%20Benz
Regarding cheap plugs, I think all or most manufacturers sell plugs for under $2 for non platinum and then much higher for their premium plugs.

Thanks for that Jud - only problem is there in the US - I need similar sites in UK - esp as the part numbers for your sparks are different in the UK.

I can get Bosch from Halfords for £80. I might go with them.

So that would be about US $10 for 1 plug, right? That's about what such a plug would go for in the US. BTW, stopped in Dover on a cruise back in May. Went to the castle and all that stuff. I've also been to London and the surrounding area. Very nice.

yeah price wise I guess I have to bite the bullet and just pay up - I just wasnt aware that MB would use Champion sparks being that they are not as good as bosch. Yeah £80 is about $160 so yeah $10 each.

If I'd have known you lived close to Dover, we could have had a cold one together. As far as the plugs go, I didn't know the CL took 2 per cylinder. Have you look into installing them yourself rather than having the stealer do it?

I did the plugs on my CL not too long ago. I went with Bosch plugs for about $7.50 each from buymbparts. There are 16 of them and it took me a few hours to do. The plugs at the rear were somewhat difficult to get to as space is tight. You'll probably want to unscrew the coil packs and lay them on top of the engine to give you more room. Also, make sure when you reconnect the plugs to the coil receptacles that they're properly secured. After my 3rd QA check, I still found some that were not fastened properly. Wiggle, push, wiggle, push until they're secured.

I was about to change my plugs in my CL55 this weekend but the auto parts store only ordered 8 plugs at $14 each! When I told them I needed 16 of them they looked at me and then all of a sudden the "best plugs" for my car changed to what they had in stock.
After questioning them a store employee came up to me and said with that type of vehicle it is probably best to use the dealer plugs so I do not hurt anything in engine.
Have any of you ever run into this? Or are you using after market plugs and if so what types?

Hey dude - I would agree that 'dealer' plugs are best but guess what - when I went to my dealer he showed me the plugs and they were bloody CHAMPION KC11PYP - all boxed as mercedes! work that out. And I always thought Champion wernt the best of sparks out there.
I personally want the Bosch ones - although ik now not sure its worth changing them yet as I have no issues and only 55K miles on the car - and apparently sparks dont need changing till 100K miles.
Still waiting for a DEFO on that though.................

Hi dude - that was www.spark-plugs.co.uk - however Ive just realised theyve quoted on 8 plugs!! They say we only need 8 plugs. Yet im sure the dealership said 16 - 2 per cylinder. If thats true then it would be £140 - well too high.
SOOOO - anybody out there - can you confirm whether we need 8 or 16 plugs for our CL500 V8's ?

Yeah, but they last 100K miles. That's about the same as the cheaper $2.00 plugs in the old days that had to be changed every 10k miles, especially if you add labor.
