CL55 AMG or CL600
I've recently had my eyes opened to the world of MB and started researching the 55AMGs and recently the CL600.
I'm still trying to get a feel for real market value of these beasts. I can hardly believe how much car I can get - it almost seems too good to be true.
An example would be this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2005-...QQcmdZViewItem
Is this a steal or is this about average?
If you were looking at a CL, what would your preference be - a CL55 AMG or a CL600 and for what reasons

If you go for the CL600, then I'd recommend finding one with the AMG sport package. It really looks much better from all angles, especially the front and rear. The 2005 that you're looking at doesn't have the AMG package. Just my opinion....

Run away!!! Run as fast as you can from these cars. I regret the day I bought mine. It has been in the shop for more BS stuff that I have neither the time nor desire to go into! It doesn't matter which is better, faster, etc., the only thing you will be dealing with is which one has more shop time. And it doesn't matter because both will be a nightmare. Everybody keeps saying don't buy unless it has a great warranty...thats because it will be in the shop all the time. I don't even take this car on trips cuz I don't trust it! Its my date car and Saturday carwash vehicle. But I can't even do the carwash anymore cuz the paint flakes off! I love my car like a retarded child. It has special needs, ****s itself in public, is at the doctor all the time, gets laughed at by its friends for being messed up, is only loved by its owner, and was a mistake that I wish was never born into my life. I'm going to hell already so I don't care if that sounds offensive. I used to call my CL Claus...not anymore, its Corky all the way.

Jay,
Sorry to hear about your negative experience. My 2004 CL600 w/ Renntech upgrades has been a great car. I've never had any problems with it and I love the car.
He should try to find a 2004 or 2005 CL600 or CL55 with less than 50,000 miles for a "good price."

I read this in another thread..
ALi,
Man I wish MB would be a little bit more consistant. They told me that it was just the system regulating itself after sitting at idle for 10 minutes. That it reduces the pressure in the system and lowers itself to the lowest setting. My ride is great, I have zero problems, so I won't take it in. I hate to risk them messing with the system and really mucking things up.

Honestly, any input would be good on this comparison. I was going to post the same thread!

I'm not sure if you're serious or kidding here...

guys I'm dead serious. You can look at every single positive thread I've posted in the past but what I'm saying right now is from the heart. The paint is awful and MB has given me the big F U. The ABC is shot, car won't sit level, a have trouble code for the ESP, and it hasn't been starting. I'm being told it might be something as simple as the starter sensor or maybe bigger things. The side door glass that was replaced for free is starting to show bubblesALREADY!!! Ok glad some of you have great experiences with ur cars...I used to! I can't sell her cuz I will lose my @ss, and I still think she is a beautiful car. I just hate that I can't trust it. All this garbage started a little over a month ago. I LOVE MB cars but I hate the service, bad attitude, and lack of concern for customer satisfaction. I spend a lot of time, effort, and money on my car. I expected more from the car and the manufacturer. Does that makes sense to everybody? I hope I'm in the minority out here and most of you are trouble free. But to answer the ?, I would go with a 55.

My experience with my car and MB in general is very different from your experience. It sounds to me like your car is a piece of ****, but this doesn't mean that all MB are ****. Your negative experience is probably not the norm. Btw, my local MB dealer is great in every way.
I'd actually pass on the 55 and go with the 600 TT and tune the ECU. You'll beat almost everything on the road.

I guess the safe thing would be to buy a low mileage CPO car and not rely on it for daly transportation.
I'm always going to need a truck so I'll have that as backup incase the MB is stuck at the dealer.

Why not get the best of both worlds...a CL65 with AMG exterior package, seats, brakes and handling, V-12TT, alcantara headliner, and premium Nappa leather.

...
I've had both and let me tell you the Cl600 I ad was smooth but had a leaking valve problem at 27K miles that was an '02, a few years later I got an '03 used as well it had the same problem leaking oil this one at 19K miles. I've had an Sl55 '04 since last june not one problem and the exhaust is way better than the 600. The only thing I liked that the 600 had that the 55 doesn't is a wood steering. I'm under 30 so I like the sporty feel of the 55 vs the 600

If I were you, I would go for the 55. Jay9722 I feel your pain, when I first got my CL I thought it was the best car in the world but slowly but surely I started having problem after problem. I think everything is fixed but I will never purchase a MB without a warranty. My warranty took care of everything but it is no way a car cost this much should have that many problems. Fyi: I think the customer service at American Service Center is good but not as good as Chevy Chase Acura. Sorry but I got say it.

My 05 CL600 has full Kleemann kit minus the aero bits. Kleeman wheels, brakes, lowering, ECU, even went for the mechanical limited slip differential. Only 14k miles on it because I have other cars. I've had a couple of ABC events, a couple of ignition coil events and I've given up on getting the thing to sit absolutely level despite several attempts at a couple of shops.
BUT...what a nice cruiser it is and I don't think twice about hopping in for a 500 mile weekend. Fast, poised, comfy, quiet, and goes around corners ok. Wife and I just did a 3 day weekend up Hwy 1 from San Francisco to Mendocino and back, about 300 miles of serpentine road on the coast. Delightful driving at a 7/10ths pace. And 627hp/800 pounds torque, even this heavyweight gets up and goes.
It's all sunk cost now and if I continue to drive it 5k miles per year, should be good for a few more years of pleasure. And in acknowledgement of potential issues down the road, I'm figuring on one dollar per mile in maintenance costs, yup $5k per year, to keep this rapidly depreciating, yet ultimately pleasant tank of a car on the road.
Final caveat: if I only could have one car, this one would not be it - just too fussy and a bit unpredictable in reliability.

The mods are so minor, BMC filters, Eisenmann race mufflers, sprintbooster...shouldn't affect it. I just posted a thread about my strating issues. I changed the crank sensor but it didn't fix the problem. I'm so frustrated! I had a "B" service done last week and all the diagnostics were good, no abnormalities...what could it be?

Tuned 600s are really beasts. I love the look on our client's faces when they drive them for the first time.
I think the 55s are better, more well rounded packages, but both tune very well and are great performers.

I would recommend the CL55 just cause I think you get a better package: bigger, better brakes; quad, sporty exhaust; AMG nameplate; sportier suspension; and a few other things here and there. I regret not getting an AMG W211 because I'm looking at all the things I want to do and it's just gonna take a lot of time and money and will never even come close. Just buy the thing with the whole package put together; I'm all about saving time. Also, a close family friend of mine who I take my benzes to recommends staying away from the V12s. Just my two cents.
Jay 9722, I know what you mean. The thing barely gets driven (a service guy at the dealer told me that you shouldn't let it sit. Yeah, ok, it's a 6 figure car, and he's telling me not to let it sit. It shouldn't have these kind of BS problems) and it still gives us problems at times. Little crap that costs a lot of money and more importantly, time (Pay the service guys $200/hr to sit and play guessing games with the computer). Have had it for a little over 2 years, bought it at 11,700 miles, and have only put about 20,000 miles on it. I have a feeling that the nightmare is just starting. I love my CL500 (I could just imagine what the 55 is like), favorite car that we've ever had, but all these computer thingies they put in these cars these days are nothing but problems. My 1994 S420 was driven every day for 10 years straight and never had problems like this one, just regular maintenance and a few things here and there.
