ABC Front Right Strut Leaking - A few questions on DIY

I am new to these forums and find the vast source of knowledge awe inspiring, I wanted to ask a few quick questions in regards to my new purchase. I have a 2000 CL500 and when the car was in the shop for an oil change, I was curious to see the front right strut leaking fluid on the inner wheel well area near the top of the strut tower. Now I know the previous owner had the struts replaced at a very high cost just a couple months ago. And I had it take to a local Mercedes Workshop and they said there is a hose that is leaking. Now my question is: Is this a DIY project I can do myself?

I am highly skilled and have done everything to cars, but I can say I have never messed with a Mercedes with ABC, and thus resulting in my question as to the difficulty of this job. They gave me a rough quote of $300 to replace it. But I wanted to pick your brains first, as this sounds like a fairly simple job. I appreciate anyone's input on this and hope to hear your opinions. Thanks again!

May I suggest that you invest in the MB STAR Service Manual Library (DVD) for your CL. The MB part # is P-2700-220/215-07. It can be order by calling MB @1-800-for-merc. They sell for under $100 directly from MB or you can find copies on Ebay for less, where I purchased mine. The info provided is excellent and comes from MB's WIS system which dealers use but is much more user friendly. This will answer most repair and maintenance questions about your CL. Good luck!

Thanks guys for your input, I truly appreciate your time more than words could ever describe. I will make a call to MB to see if the recall was done on my CL. And I will be buying this DVD, Just a quick question in regards to this service manual, are the eBay versions the same as the one ordered from Mercedes?

You're welcome. You'll find these forums to be an excellent source of info.

As for the DVD service manual I got on Ebay, it's a copy. I didn't realize it when I bid. Had I known, I would have opted to purchase it from MB. However, it works fine so far. I believe it is the same as the MB DVD which runs about $100. It basically mirrors the WIS system that the stealers use but is much more user friendly. (I have both the WIS and this DVD.) I paid $55 with shipping for the Ebay copy. However, I just checked Ebay and I don't see any for sale. In any event, if someone is going to work on their CL, it's a must have item and will save them mucho dinero.

Ok guys I have an update, I took the car to the dealership and they said that on my CL500 the hose has already been recalled and replaced. They wont do it again. So i have ordered the CL W215 Star dvd. But I wanted to know from you guys first if this can be a DIY project or will it have to be done by a dealer? Does the system recirculate the fluid and is there a place to bleed out the the air after installing a new suspension part?

File a complaint with the NHTSA if MBUSA does not agree to fix at no charge. They need to know that the recalled hose failed. It is a very serious safety issue that can lead to you car burning to the ground. That's why it was recalled in the first place. It can also lead to death if you or your passengers could not get out of the car before it is engulfed.

+1, he's right.

if it was recalled and it failed again, they should still honor it, that means they didn't do a good job the first time (if it's the same hose). Ya, try to contact MBUSA in New Jersey. The only time we ever called them was back in 98 when my father's 94 S420 started having the dreaded AC problem. They decided to honor it out of warranty for him.

i seen videos of CL500s caught on fire on the streets.

oh wow, I did not know there was a possibility of having it changed out again from the dealer. I will take the care back to them and call MBUSA in regards to what you guys have told me. I really appreciate your comments guys!
