Excessive wear on rear tires

I purchased a 2004 CL500 less than a year ago. Even though I don't know when the tires were put on, the date code indicates they were manufactured in 2020. And I seem to remember they were in good condition when I bought it.

Based on Carfax, the rear tires couldn't have more than 8k miles on them yet they are down to the wear bar now!

They are continental extremecontact dws06 plus 265/40 R18. Wear index 560.
they appear to wear fairly evenly, driver side outside wears a little less (see pictures).

What could have caused this? I don't drive aggressively at all. Car seems to ride fine.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Does it need an alignment?

Right rear seems a bit low on air

Welcome to the forums
True they may need to be checked for alignment....or possibly other suspension components ..20 year old car, but also MB's are heavy, tire eating cars.

CL's are great looking cars, enjoy!

My rears last about 10k mi on the dot before they're near bald on the inner 6th of the tire. Had an alignment 3 years ago.... That's just how they are! Yours are way more evenly worn than mine, actually. Same tires. Last owner might have had some fun before selling, lol.

Oh yeah, these cars are equipped with ABC, which is the best suspension that there is.

But the downside is that it really leans on your tires, to compensate for body roll, I think that might have something to do with it as well

Thanks for all the suggestions and input, makes me feel better now lol. Given that they are worn quite evenly and the car rides well (smooth and tracks straight), I'd be surprised if it's an alignment issue.
Sounds like this may not be out of the norm.

I think worn bushings *might/could* also cause excessive tire wear, but I'm not entirely sure about that

TODAYS MODELS OEM IT ALL COMES BACK TO LACK OF WHEEL ALIGNMENT FACILITYS (and new car industry's best kept secret)....

The often quoted (reassuring) - “WILL CARRY OUT A FULL FRONT & REAR ‘4’ WHEEL ALIGNMENT”

WHEN IN ACTUAL FACT - all that can be adjusted now is basic / single Toe - “directional adjustment” !

It is all to do with cost cutting and ever increasing speed of new car assembly lines.

NO LONGER ESSENTIAL CAMBER (OR CASTER) TO ADJUST TIRE CONTACT ANGLES - ALLOWING TO SPREAD LOAD MORE EVENLY !

To cater for other then “showroom height” conditions encountered in day to day commuting.

....high cambered roads with excess passenger side edge wear. Wheel squat through load carrying or lowering. Fitting wide profile tires or simply having ongoing adjustment capability for curb knock damage.

Then the frustration of being told “cannot resolve these issues” and with the only possible excuse (to try and placate) - “That it is within factory specs” !!

We saw the need therefore and manufacture for all W215 models incl. AMG.

FRONT (CAMBER ONLY) #502516-1i $345 (Both Sides).
Less cost then one hi performance tire (fitting without need for arm removal).

FRONT CAMBER & CASTER #502516K $480 (Both Sides)
Same time replaces the 4 front highest wearing bushings. Monoball / self aligning significantly improving brake and steering response.

REAR SUSPENSION

CAMBER (& EXTRA TOE) #502126K $480 (Both Sides) Fitting without need for arm removal.

ALL KITS UNIQUE PATENTED DESIGN PROVIDING “PRECISE SINGLE WRENCH ADJUSTMENT”. Ultimate - direct on alignment rack (under load).

DHL Express delivery $40 one kit or $60 Front & Rear.
