The old 500/560 sec's cost more than the sedans at that time too, fully loaded. These look sleek, worthy successors to those, much nicer than the 215, imo

Yes, it does have nicer materials
I can attest to the new CL having better quality fit and finish and materials than the new S-class. I drove the new S-Class for a couple weeks and it was just not as nice as my new CL. Worth every penny of the price difference.

06 CLS55 w/ P030, 05 Jag S Type R, 05 TBird-68 Dodge Charger R/T-440 w/4speed I'm original owner
A couple of weeks ago I was in a MB showroom in so cal looking at a pre owned CL55. Beside the saleman, a MB Factory Rep was there helping me justify trading in my new CLS 55 for this CL.
I was asking the same questions to him. Engine HP availablity with same engines in difference models. His answer was "the Marketing Group". Give it a thought and it makes sense. In order to get want you want, you just can't load options on a lesser model to get a model upgrade without having to upgrade to that model. Hoping I'm making sense.
It you want 500HP its available in limited models and pricepoints. You can't get it in a clk you need to upgrade to CLS63 or above like SL55, etc. You can figure this out because MB is getting more dollars out of your pocket for a model upgrade vs additional options.

ahhh you can get it (500hp) in a CLK. A clk cab in fact. and later this year you can get 500hp or close in the new c class.
