They're both HUGE cars. I imagine the CL would be more fun to drive since it's smaller (correct me if I am wrong).

In terms of value and investment... NO CLUE. I would never buy a vehicle as an investment.

I haven't gotten a chance to drive a S55 yet, but I will tell you the CL is damn fun to drive!

But so was the E55. I personally think...all 55s are just really fun to take out for a spin.

but ya got to love the coupes!

Thats true..I have always liked the coupes. I guess what I am wondering is which will take the bigger bath...I can buy either car as a 2003 for about the same price. After 2 or so years which one do you all think will be worth more?

Mercs depreciate like mad for some reason. They're not like 911's, which can hold its value until the world blows up. Just my $0.02.

Well...I've owned both the CL500 and a CL600 as well as an S55. I prefer the CL to the S models hands down. The S is more practical w/ 4 doors, but the CL just looks much nicer to me. I also notice alot more heads turn driving the CL, whereas the S55 just seemed to be viewed as yet another 4 door Mercedes. Also, I prefer the interior of the CL (the S felt very plain in comparison) and although similar in size, the CL drives like a much smaller car.

As far as depreciation goes....I'm figuring the original owner of my 03 CL600 lost about $70+ grand in 3 years when he traded it in to the dealer.....OUCH...good reason to lease if it is new!!
(I'm calculating an original sticker of at least $130k considering it has every option but heated steering wheel).
I think in comparison, over time the S55 will hold its' value a little better considering the popularity of the "S" badge and the added practicality!

The S will hold its value much better than the CL. The coupe market is a strange one---there are a limited number of buyers for the coupes and resale is difficult. That is one of tha reasons that they depreciate faster. The local dealer had a gorgeous new CL55 on the lot for 6 months before someone stepped up to the plate and bought it. Beautiful car but limited appeal.

I just traded an '01 911TT for an '03 CL55.
The 911 lost 58% of its' retail in 5 years.
The CL lost 50% of its' in 3 years.

Truth is, the 911 was not a prime example and the CL is pretty high.
