The CLK is the smaller coupe based on the C-Class and priced more like an E-Class. The CL is a coupe version of the S-Class in all but name. The CL is usually prettier and much more technically more advanced and a whole lot more expensive.

id take a CL over a CLK if price wasnt an issue...but regardless I dont think the CLK's are worth the money...rather pay 10-15k more for a well optioned 650cic than save that extra money and get a well optioned CLK550 (to be) convertible

CLK = Coupe Light Short
CL = Coupe Light
SL = Sport Light
SLR = Sport Light Racing
SLK = Sport Light Short
C = Compact
E = originally stood for the whatever the German word is for "Fuel Injection". This was when Mercedes called their cars 300"E" and 300C"E" on so on. Not sure what it mean exactly today. E could mean "Executive" now, not sure.
S = Super in the case of the "S-Klasse" or "Special" in the case of the Maybach 57S.
G = of course is short for "Gelaendewagen".
I have no idea what the A,B,CLS,R,GL,ML models designations stand for. I'll take a guess that "CLS" stands for Coupe Light Sport or something like that, who knows now since Mercedes has a jillion different models now.
