2001 Cl63

Greetings,

I hope this post finds everyone well...

I may have an opportunity to purchase a 2001 CL63 (already own a 2001 CL600, 1997 S600)... However, I cannot find much informaiton about this car... I have found this out from one website;

The CL63 AMG is the rarest CL of all. It was produced only in November 2001, and just 26 examples were ever built for sale. The V12-powered CL63 AMG was only sold in Europe and Asia. Mercedes-Benz never offered the CL63 for sale; all were sold exclusively through AMG with a base price of £110,000 (~US$200,000).

I have found a car being offered for sale here in Illinois being advertised as a CL63 with 25k miles... According to the (limited) documentation I have seen, it was shipped to the US in April / May 2001, which seems to be in coflict with the above as to when they were built (or is the above wrong, as it should read that they were built in November 2000 as opposed to 2001?

The car has had extensive "Renntech" modifications made to it, which leads me to believe that this is truly a CL600 which as been converted...

If I use the VIN Decoder on this site, here is the information I get (which even makes me more confused)...

Year of Manufacture 2004
Chassis Code 163
Manufacturer Name 4
Model
Restraint Systems
Displacement
Horsepower
Fuel Gasoline
Production Plant Tuscaloosa
Country of Manufacture Germany
Production No. 4

The car as priced would probably be a good value / buy if just a converted CL600, but since I am not interested in this, I am wondering if anyone out there can help me get further information on the CL63 (i.e. is the above true, and if so, are their VIN's which you could look at to see if it was one of the 26 produced or not)...

Appreciate any and all the help you can provided...

God Bless and Bye for Now, David

AKAIK:

The CL63 is a collectors item. It is an increased displacement 6.3 liter version of the 5.5 liter naturally aspirated V12 of the C215 CL before the facelift, which also brought the V12 twin turbo with 500Hp. There is also a limited run of 2001 S63 vehicles.

IMO

The CL63 is a collectors item because so little have been made (FWIW). It having 'extensive Renntech' modifications would make it a no-go for me as such cars should be kept in mint condition.

Your VIN output is rather strange. What do our russian friends say about the VIN? http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng

And from the AMG website the attachment with a little official info.

There is one for sale here too: http://www.asv.nl/aanbod/detail/?097...E4CE9C5E74283/ My wallet itches every time I see it...

Great Information & Help...

Yes, the appeal to me is the limited production... The fact that it has the Renntech modifications certainly takes away from the vehicle, if in fact it is a true CL63... I am still not convinced it is... As your one site indicated, production was limited to one month (November 2001), which if accurate, is late for the year / model (maybe not) and the shipping date to the US would have been prior to it's production date (if true)...

This is actually sitting at a dealer here in the US, with 25k miles... I am going to go and have a look at it tomorrow... I told them I wanted to see the custom's sticker and documentation, since this car was not made for the US, but imported / converted by an authorized MB dealer... As such, they should be able to prove the conversion, otherwise, my feeling is that it was just a CL600 that got coverted in the US...

Having said that, here is what your VIN site told me... Since I am far from an expert in this area, I do not know if there is some information here, which would tell you if this is truly an original CL63 (i.e. the date of production, and the fact that it was delivered to a US dealer)...

Now, having said all the above, even if NOT a true CL63, the car seemingly priced farily for a car which was converted (i.e. 2001 CL600 with extensive Renntech modifications and 25 k miles)...

Appreciate your help... After I go and look at it, I will post back my reply...

Those were just a few photos of a CL63 I found while browsing some time back. ds. If you can, is there a link to dealer's website or a photo of the motor you can post. I don't believe RennTech offered motor rebuilds for the M137 V12; in fact, only Brabus (according to my recollection) offered a reputable motor upgrade with the M137. The top trim was the 6.7 Litre S form, which yieled 475 hp. Good luck with the sale, for if it is original, then you have quite an exclusive automobile on your hands.

Rare, interesting car. Will U.S. Benz dealers know how or even agree to service it?

This VIN output talks about a CL600. Which was of course the basis in the case of a CL63. It is however completely unclear to me wether or not it is a CL63... Could be that, seeing the limited produciton run, they didn't bother homologation and an own VIN as all AMG vehicles have now. If you stay uncertain you can always call/fax AMG directly with your question. I'm sure they will be able to dig up the records of a CL63 with that VIN.

Easiest thing to do is call RENNtech in florida and ask them to give you the history on the vehicle. RENNtech did make a small batch of 6.3L V12 CL's but they are not exactly that amazing of vehicles. That V12 in non turbo form was fairly weak and known for some issues with the variable displacement feature.

If it is a RENNtech car its a quality upgrade and it would make a nice car but if the seller wants anything close to the value of a 2003 55k or 600 I would just get the Factroy speed machine.
