Night Vision Useful or gadget??

I'm planning to buy a S63 or CL63 AMG fully loaded, but am not really convinced about the night vision system.

Even my dealer informs me that it's rather useless as you tend to look through the front windscreen instead of 'playing a video game' while looking at the screen in the dashboard.

What's your experience in real traffic conditions?

I have no experience w/ this particular system, but I know that NVG systems have been plagued in the past with problems of decreased depth perception and light sensitivity. It would be interesting to see how they have addressed these issues for problems like oncoming traffic (bright lights), and driving w/n around 50 ft of same direction traffic....where your depth perception really counts. Actually, its not the night vision display that causes the lack in depth perception (at least on modern sets), but rather going back and forth visually between the "scope/goggles" and outside of the vehicle (w/o goggs). Anyone care to add, or answer fire away!

NVD more of a marketing ploy, I opine, when it comes to vehicles.
much better to have IR than light amplification....but the price
for that technology puts it through the roof in terms of cost.
with NVD....more of a solution in search of a problem.

In my opinion it is actually useful in rural/dark areas, if you make it part of your normal eye scan.

In the suburban/urban areas it's much less useful.

The system in the 221/216 is an IR based system. Its not the bull**** cadillac system. Its really nice in inclement weather.

Night vision in practice

Well, after impatiently waiting a couple of weeks to get a demo car (CL 63), I actually tried night vision myself.

Used it for a couple of minutes, then switched it off, tried again and after while decided not to order it on my new CL 63.

Bottom line (as described above): gadget with very little practical use. I agree completely with Eddietr. However making it part of your normal eye scan is particularly tiring, something which such a system is not really intended for ....

i never use it. there is no depth perception at all and if you leave it on in the background as something to scan to as a reference then it just becomes a distraction within your peripheral vision when not looking at it. i have never tried it in a rural area so i can't comment on that though.

I agree Gadget.

I like to leave it on when I valet park. That is about the only useful think I have found about it. We used it on a drive a few weeks ago in the middle of nowhere and I still seemed to see deer better with my headlights rather than the NV screen. I even stopped and compared a few with my wife. Gadget for sure.

I think distronic is useless too. It slows you down way too far away so the people in front of you don't ever move over as you approach them. If you shut off the sensors you don't even have normal cruise control. It also then changes the screen available in the rear view camera and limits that feature also.

DHH - I'm a little confused as to how you leave it on when you valet park. I can't seem to find dark enough scenarios to actually use it. So far, it's a skip-it-on-the-next-one option for me also.

The Distronic I'm getting to like, though I can't say I see the need on a daily basis. On the right roads it is a nice feature, but honestly I find it more gadget like than necessary, although it is a real crowd pleaser. The distance is adjustable, so you can close the gap between you and the vehicle in front, although I'm not sure I trust it that much!

If you can use the NV without headlights, it would be great at the drive-in movie, if there were any left, other than the one in Globe, AZ. Oh well, my vote goes to gadget.
