Hooking up

Despite what you may think, this thread is not about little old me driving around South Beach in my CL63 and "hooking up" with a beautiful blonde in a bikini...although that's wishful thinking. What I've noticed is that now that the 63 has passed the 1000 mile mark, and I have launched it off the line a few times (at half throttle), the rear tires seem to spin a bit before they hook up. The ESP is on and I haven't given it full throttle off the line, but even today in a demo run with a friend in the car, there was so much wheelspin that it went a little sideways before it got going. It's great for theatrics, but I'm thinking the factory Yoko's are just not capable of handling the torque. Have any of you experienced this? I mean the wheelspin, not the hooking up with the blonde on SoBe.

I think everything sounds normal based on what you said. Mine, with Renntech, does a little bit of that too. Is the yellow warning triangle lighting up when that happens???? The Yokos may be a slight problem though. I am on Michelins and my car just barely spins on take off and I see the yellow triangle come on for just a second. I really think your car is fine though. Enjoy!

Have CL63 030 w/Contis....driven 7K+ mis.....often accelerate aggressively, usu in mid-range, but sometimes from 0 MPH and occasionally in rain/uneven pavement.....would argue CL63 has superb tq/traction balance....better than SL55s I had yrs ago...similar tq/trac balance as '07 CL600....

Have several colleagues w/CL63 030 w/Contis (who've each owned many 55/600/65 in past) who relay similar feedback re: CL63 tq/trac balance....

But one of these guys just traded-in his CL63 030 for another new CL63 030....this copy has Yokos....will get his feedback....had heard AMG specifically calibrated these Yokos vs AMG CL chassis.....so had hoped Yokos would be an improvement.....

BTW, presume you have correct tire P's set, etc?

Chkd w/friend who has CL63 w/Yokos....driven some 400mis to-date...largely urban streets and high-speed fwys; some drives in rain; no mtn twisties driving yet; rare full-throttle accel from 0MPH, but much aggressive/full-throttle mid-range accel.....reports trac is similar to Contis.....

Part of why both of us passed on getting '08 CL65 is its poor real-world traction; your descrip of your CL63's trac sounded like trac of my previous '07 SL65......find that I drive faster/accel more aggressively in CL63 than in 65 simply b/c have far more confidence in CL63's trac/stability on uneven and/or wet pavement.....

Another thought....is it poss that Yokos take a bit longer to warm up/achieve trac than do Contis? (I typically wait about 7-10mins post-start-up to allow fluids and tires to warm up sufficiently before any vigorous accel)

I have found that all of these cars are more than capable of spinning their tires.

For me it has been finding the balance with my right foot of feeding in the right amount of throttle smoothly. I spend a fair amount of time on road courses where this is critical, and with our car's amount of torque, this is even more so. It just takes practice! I guess things could be worse.

btw...you might want to be going slower to pick up the blond!

Interesting. The E63 030 hooks up like crazy when just going full throttle off the line. Not mashing it, but quickly applying throttle. Now power brake to 1200 PRM and mash it with traction control on and the engine gets killed very quickly. Do the same with traction control off and you get what you were describing.

Here is something to try I am interested in.

In manual in 2nd gear drive at 4000RPM and then mash the throttle. With traction control on I get a big jerk as traction control jumps in aggrssively and then the car accelerates as normal - like a beast. Try the same with traction control off. I seem to get little spin, just the slightest chirp. My feeling is the traction control is too agressive.

The fact that you are spining so uncontrolled with tration control on seems odd.

Hi, Jon:

I didn't mean to imply that the wheelspin I got was uncontrolled. It seems to me that the traction control actually allows some wheelspin before stepping in and decreasing the power. I'm beginning to think it's been dialed in on purpose to prevent the car from actually becoming dead off the line like when one tries to launch in the wet. My observations are admittedly limited, as most of the time I drive very gently, actually going up the gears in automatic mode rather quickly. When I lay into the throttle a bit, the car actually holds the lower gears a bit longer, as though it were anticipating more spirited driving and remaining ready for more. My car has a little over 1000 miles on the clock, so I'm NOT one to make deep and profound comments about it. I enjoy the ability to really smoke most cars on the road, but I exercise restraint. On occasion, though, the testosterone takes over and I allow myself a bit of tire smoke .

Putting 305/25 series tires on the back wheels really helped out my launch, at least on the CL55. You still cannot just drop the hammer instantly, but it helps quite a bit.
