Brake In

Hi

I have one simple Q:

Does the CL 55 require any brake in before a certin milage, or is it possible just to hit the peadl to the metal as soon as i get it.

the reason iam asking this is because the M/B dealer said you should drive slowly, don't go to high RPMs, don't jam the brakes hard for the firist 1500 KM.

thankx.

There are 2 sides to this.

Some will say drive it like a bat out of hell off the dealers lot.

Others will advise to take it easy for the 1st 1000 miles.

I personally take it easy for the 1st thousand miles so that all the mechanical parts (Trans, etc), have a chance to work themselves in.

Ahhh, I am going through this dilemma right now. I would split the difference. Go easy on it (RPM is most important) for 750 KM, then, enjoy. Keep in mind I am no mechanic before listening to my advice.

Avoid extended time periods (10 mins or so and longer) at the same rpm. If cruising on the highway, alternate among gears 3-5. This is pretty much universally agreed upon.

As for how many rpm is "safe" or good for break-in, that's a more divisive topic. I've always let 'er rip after the first 400 miles or so and never had any even remotely related issues with any car.

But do vary rpm.

It Varies
I once read that the AMG engines are ran at redline rpm for 30 minutes continuously before being sent out. This should "break it in" pretty well in my opinion. However, when I get my car, just to be safe, im going to take it easy on the car for the first 500 miles (varying rpms', not above 5 rpm). Whatever you choose, im sure it will be fine.....just dont mash on the throttle for the first few hundred miles.

There are recommendations in the owners manual for break in miles and RPM.

does anyone have concerns about the oil change intervals that MB has been using? The car's computer will let us know when scheduled oil changes are due, depending on the car's usage, but it is usually around 10 or 12k miles, which seems like a lot. I've observed the owner's manual on break-in and oil changes, but may change oil/filter more often with my CL55.

I change the oil every 5,000 ... Although I feel the synthetic oil is good for the 10k interval, the filter is the weak link. Its small and I question its ability to effectively filter for that long. Cheap peace of mind for me to change every 5k. Works out that I change the oil then let the dealer do the change at the A/B server that would soon follow.
