burn notice

The attached MB “star bulletin” relates to high oil consumption for the 63 (engine 156). They say that 1.35 quart/1000 mi is acceptable.

I’m not technical but it looks like CYA to me and I’d appreciate any feed back about if this is really normal for a perfect engine. I have a 997S with 10000 miles that has not burned any oil.

BTW, did you get the title – burn notice – like the TV show. HA HA HA. I’m so clever; I don’t even know how I can live with myself.

Suspect it's CYA....esp in era of falling sales vols and profit margins, any mfr wants to control warranty repair costs (often a profit ctr for dealers)

In my expce, any perf motor (esp turbos) from AMG, F or P has variable rates of oil burn, esp in first ~3K mis....mechanics don't seem to understand variances...so need for mfr to place wide parameters on "normal" to avoid lots of unnecessary warranty expense

Oil burn is much like squeaking w/perf brakes, which Big 3 (AMG, F and P) occasionally suffer...again, have never been convinced mechanics have a logical explanation (or solution) for this random issue

Have had dozens of new AMG/F/P over past 10yrs...can't recall any w/material oil burn (except one 996TTS) or any w/squeaky brakes (except one 996TTS and one 997TT, both w/PCCBs)

Not much different then owning a 2 cycle engine where you have to mix oil with the gas. The only difference is every gas fill up you add the oil not to the gas but to the engine

That’s my problem; I’ve been putting it into the wrong orifice.

Just think by using a quart every 1K miles you would never need to change oil

Unhappy

It seems as if every automaker has bought into various degrees of planned obsolesence. That is just sad they think that level of consumption is okay.
