paddle shifters

How many drivers out there use your paddle shifters? I have a cl55 2005 and don't use them because I am not sure how to use them. Are they just cluchless shifters ? Can I over rev the engine? I just didn't want to play with them until I get some advice. Lost the car manuals so I figured I would ask here. One thing that happens when I am driving sometimes is that I hit the shifter by accident and it shifts. Not good. Also do you drive in "c" mode or "s" mode ? thanks for any response

from what i understand the car has to be in M mode for the shifters to work. they should not upshift or downshift when you press them and you are in C or S.
I could be wroung, but the above statement is true for a E55

I have heard that before and it may be true on the early 55's. My 2006 E55 and my SL55 will upshift or downshift iwith the buttons in both M or S.

My CL55 will change with the steering wheel buttons in C, S or M mode. Mine is a Australia spec vehicle. Perhaps the specs are different with the US vehicles.

If you use them in S or C mode, the adaptive shift may think(shift) for you, In M you are in control of the shifting except that the system wont let you down shift if its not in an ideal rev range. Great for preparing for a pass.

Thanks for the info.My car does shift in s,m,c, mode. I tried it today. I see how it is good for passing. Is "c" comfort and"s" sport? anybody know the difference? shorter shift times etc?

The US version(s) of the AMG will "manually" shift in all three Transmission Settings.

Incidentally, it's not Sport, Mercedes calls it Standard mode in the manuals.

Thanks

Thanks! Found the manuals. The wife liked the cover for god knows what and put the books in my file cabnet in the garage.I would say more but I don't know if she reads these threads.Love her but she doesn't understand about the way I feel about my car. I am going to use the shifters to see the advantage of them. Will they caulse more wear on the tranny?

Just to explain some differences: In S, it starts the car out in 1st gear (from a stop) while C will start the car in 2nd gear. I personally like to think of S as Sport, although MB refers to them as Standard. It seems to be more responsive and "ready" for any situation. While shifting in S or C, if it says "D4" you're not necessarily going to be in 4th gear. You're telling the car that it can shift only through gears 1-4. It will only use the rest of the gears if you hit redline. It will still shift up and down on it's own. In M, the number displayed is the gear that the car is currently in. It will not upshift if you hit redline, but will automatically down shift for you when coming to a stop.
Hope this helps.

Don't mean to argue the point, but my CL65 upshifts when in Manual mode and it hits redline.

And it does indeed downshift when coming to a stop.

Ron = As long as you don't get stupid with the tranny, you should be fine. Just make sure you change the tranny oil. I do mine every 15K miles, but I'm tuned and I usually drive in Manual mode.

Actually, "S" is known as "Sport Mode" for "Standard Driving" according to the MB Manuals.

One can manually upshift or downshift without worrying too much because the TCU will not allow a shift if it is beyond its safety parameters.

Well Sir... I didn't have a say in what Mercedes should call the S Mode. They must have lost my phone number, as I never got a call from them.

As such, I can only go by what my Owner's Manual says... and it says "Standard" mode.

To check and see if the transmission fluid has been changed, look for the transmission dipstick next to the passenger side rear corner of the engine. Once you find it, check the color of the clip on top of the oil dipstick tube. It's been a while since I've seen the color (I don't buy the clip since I change the transmission oil so often), but IIRC it should be red if the transmission oil has ever been changed. Black clip if it still has factory oil. I'm sure someone will correct me on the colors if I am mistaken.

Get a transmission filter while you're at it, and do it the right way. Drop the pan. This will require a new pan gasket (cheap), as well.

Personally, I stay with MB transmission fluid. That's the only fluid I buy from MB. It's relatively cheap, and MB can't complain if something happens to the tranny and I go after them.

I use them most of the time. Especially after getting the newer aluminum paddles now it's more fun.
