2 spark plugs

2005 Cl55amg Anybody know why we have 2 spark plugs per cylinder? I have been told "better spark, emissions, more horsepower" etc etc...

When they built the 3-valve (as opposed to the 4-valve), they had more room in the head. They threw in the twin-spark for the idea of burning better fuel.

Pretty much...

WIS dual spark ignition function description:

"Two plugs for each cylinder are beneficial because of the arrangement of the valves for achieving optimal emission levels and smooth engine running. Both ignition sparks of one cylinder are released simultaneously and always with optimum power."

The arrangement of two plugs per cylinder is one is a negative electrode and the other positive. When ignited, the arc is more efficient due to the fact it travels from one plug to another. Physics 101.

The arc does not travel from on plug to another, nor is one positive and one negative. Each Each plug has it's own positive electrode and own ground electrode. MB ignition coil contains 2 coils in one. One is an "A" coil and one is a "B" coil. There is a functionality via sds to cutout coil a or b for smooth engine diagnosis. If the system functions as you believe, during this test you would end up with a dead miss on a cylinder...which this is not the case.

So while your theory is correct on simple physics, it is not the way the dual spark ignition functions on a 112/113 Benz.

Certain model year 111/104's function as you described. Although the arc does not jump directly from one electrode to the other. When the electromagnetic field collapses from the primary windings to the secondary windings, the spark is discharged from the coil, to the plug, across the first gap, current travel through the head, back across the other plug gap, through the wire, to negative side of he secondary coil windings.

If you moded your engine, change them out.. I went one heat range colder and it is a quick easy change X 16 plugs!

unless you have two intercoolers sitting on top of them... then you need 24 plugs.

Dual plug cyclinders have a more complete fuel burn, less emissions and more power, PLUS they are less prone to detonation with a smoother flame travel. Sorry but NOT due to "one plug being negative and the other positive"....

Dual spark plugs have multiple purposes!

Talking from the SL65-AMG engine with dual spark plugs pr cylinder, the design have a multipurpose use.

One is to have a better and more efficient spark/ignition and therefore a faster and more efficient burning in the combustion champer without knocking to happened.

Second is to be able to measure the possible ignition knocking in the combustion chamber long before the normal knocking sensors mounted in the cylinder block picks up the situation. This is done immediately after each firing of the opposite spark plug in the combustion chamber.

Third is to be able switch between single, simultaneously or sequently fireing the spark plugs depending on the load/driving condition of the engine.

I have the fuld MB official technically description available if you are interested. I'm not sure if the V8 has same advanced ignition system, but my best guess is it has!
