Extra Kick?

Since I just recently surpassed my 1,000 mile break in...I have been driving the car a bit and noticed that when you put the pedal all the way down...and then push it a bit harder, you will notice some moe space in which you can push it further. When I did this, the RPM's accelerated to 7.5 and the car took off...

Anyone else have this experience?

I will try that later today and get back to you. What's the redline on this thing anyways?

Im not sure if its just with the CL55...but I did notice it when I hit the gas pedal down...then was able to push it a bit more - almost as if I was pushing through another level....and the car took off like I have never felt it do before - the RPMS went to 7.5 and I was gone.

As for Red line...there is no official red line mark on my CL55 - which is odd.

You have pressed the "rocket" button. Go and take a closer look behind the gas pedal, you will find a circular button, when you floor it, that button is activated and your car will give you the maximum power/kickdown available. I believe all current MB models have that button.

That's just a kickdown switch that drops you down a gear, thus bringing your RPMs higher and giving you that sudden burst of acceleration. It won't kickdown to a lower gear if it will exceed the revlimiter in that lower gear. I'm pretty sure all MB automatics have it and most european automatics for that matter. It's great for highway passing but can actually be a pain in the *** on a track when you are trying to keep you car in a certain gear.

Yes i've noticed that too. It's like you press it all the way down and if you press further more it's like some sort of a switch or somethin??

That is not a "rocket button" That is just a cover piece to cover up the nut that holds the gas pedal in place. Actually the whole gas pedal is quite interesting. I was replacing my pedal with a billet aluminum one from a 2002 SL silver arrow pedal. The gas pedal in this drive by wire set up is such that once you unscrew that nut, the whole damn thing comes off with 2 wires dangling. Almost like a playstation pedal, no mecahnical linkage at all. BTW the SL pedals looks great

That's the kickdown feature...if you press it all the way down pass full throttle and feel that click or button, what have you, it downshifts to the lowest gear possible without going over the rev limiter to give you the maximum acceleration, hence the "rocket" like feeling when the car pulls forward. All the automatics in the U.S. have it...dating back to when I don't know. I have it in my '94...so I'm assuming it goes a way back.

@ CL55NYC:

what car did you drive before the CL? (with auto tranny..)

I'm pretty sure almost every auto tranny has that.. Even our earlier Volvo 740d had that ...

Doesn't this button also turn the A/C off while it's pressed? To allow maximum power. I think I read that somewhere..probably on this forum.

don't think a button for turning of the AC would be located under the pedal...

i believe all MB HVAC systems (A/C), when under full throttle (acceleration), it redirects the power to the engine for max acceleration then when the pedel is released, the air blows to the center vents again as normal.

I tried it again over the weekend...with the AC on...and yes..it did shut my AC off.

Pretty interesting.

I have used that "button" before but never with such an effect like on the CL55. There is a brief pause - RPM's go to almost 7,000 and then it takes off.

Do you mean to say that the car will rev up to 7000 while standing and then grab 1st gear or does it just rev all the way to 7000 before shifting. I think this may have something to do with SpeedShift because the kick down switch has never held rev's that high on any recent Benz's I've driven.

Whenever the Kickdown function is activated, the car is in a lower gear and the throttle is held at the higher engine speed of that lower gear, no jerk is felt like when downshifting in a manual car, and when kickdown does appear it sorta sends the needle flying to the redline very quickly, so it actually looks like the engine is spinning off the scale when really it isn't, you can't redline any Merc engine, only the SLR can, briefly, that is.
