Check Engine light and Loose Gas Cap warning at the same time

I was driving the CL65 today and I got the check engine light and Loose gas cap warning at the same time. I have replaced the gas cap with a new one last year when I got the warnings so it can't be the issue. I'm assuming its a emission related issue as the car didn't go into limp mode. Could it be the purge valve? Has anyone else had this problem?

Well I bought a scanner today and I pulled the code. The code is 0455 Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (gross leak/no flow). I cleared the code and the check engine light shut off. I have no idea where to start in trouble shooting the emission system.

There was a similar thread recently and the op provided a solution. Look it up.

Edit: it is in the r230 forum - https://mbworld.org/forums/sl55-amg-...oline-car.html

I just read it. It seems the problem wasn't fixed.

Ah, I did not read the most recent update in the other thread.

I posted something there. It might or might not be your problem/ solution.

Try cleaning The Purge valve line. Should be labeled -MOT- solenoid looking with a line going in from tank and out to engine vacuum. On drivers side located near rear of valve cover on fire wall. I believe CRC MAF cleaner is used to blow out the tube going to tank. Make sure to wait at least 10-15 min for the cleaner to evaporate before reconnecting. you should hear a nice hollow tube sound when cleaned.

One cause is from over filling gas tank. Don't top off the gas at the pump. hope this helps

Nobody can tell you what your problem is. get a DAS and read the error codes and then I personally can tell you what your problem is.

Help everything works out for you!

you know, it's funny the first thing my service advisor asked me when I brought my car in for a check engine code (was a thermometer issue) was: did you tighten your gas cap all the way?

He said it was an issue with these cars.

My gas cap is always tight. Another forum member pm'd me an idea. I will try it and report back.

Did this ever get fixed? I have a W220 and got the "loose cap" warning repeatedly despite cap being quite secure. Replaced the cap. Took longer but it is still throwing the warning along with the "check engine" companion.

Your evaporative canister is faulty. Remove the driver side rear wheel, remove rear liner. The water heater looking part is your problem.
