The front square rings were in bad shape on my car and I had to 'improvise' meaning I doubled up on some of the round o-rings where I could. They could be slid off and and on, I did not see the need for them to be cut...

Doubling up on orings doesnt have the same effect as a proper backup ring. While it may work initially it wont last like it should

I have a feeling I'll have to pull it apart again at some point. It was the backup rings that were in bad shape so I will have to get some new ones.
