CL65 turned off while driving... anyone else have this happen??
I have an '05 CL65 with 47k miles. I was driving on the freeway last night and it turned itself off while at freeway speed. I lost power steering, which I'll tell you is nice to have, especially when driving faster. :P It's a good thing I wasn't going through a corner, or I likely would've had a bad accident. I got the car to the side, put it in park and it restarted just fine. No warnings, nothing.
I had to replace one of my ignition coils a few months ago and know that my other one isn't far behind. Could this be a coil issue? Now I don't feel like I can trust my car. If it were to happen again while going around a tight corner, I'd be screwed. And even worse, it would be awful if that happened when other drivers were close that I could potentially hit. Not cool.
Thanks for any advice....

BlownV8, not that I'm aware of. I had been driving for quite awhile on the freeway...
Brought it in to a friend's shop & they plugged it in. No codes. Bringing it to a Benz/AMG specialist who thinks it may be a crank sensor...

The "no codes" shut off is a dead give away. It is your cps. They begin to fail when engine is hot and will start working again when engine cools of a bit. It gets worse in time.
Cheap and easy to replace.
Coils will not just quit- there will be misfiring and codes.

Typically when a cps is bad enough to shut the car off it won't restart immediately. No codes lean toward a bad cps or that your key lost contact with the ignition for a moment.

I also have seen 5+ cars with bad CPS and no CEL.
On my car I had a loose plug on the ECU which caused the same thing to happen. It was hard to track down because it was one of those things I thought was just about impossible to happen.

ugly unrelated ones - "low fuel pressure", "cam sensor failure", "throttle position implausible" and the like.... god help you if you start reading too much into them...

I had this happen to me and it was the CPS but i also recently had my car shut off while driving and restart instantly and never had the issue again
No errors or anything it was very strange and to this day i have no idea what it was

Yeah, that might have been it, i am 6'2 with long legs so i might have kneed it and not noticed
It kind if freaked me out when it happened though because i was coming to a stop at a stoplight and the brakes got stiff when the car went off

For my CL55 the part was around $95 (OEM on PartsGeek.com) and the labor was about the same but from what I've heard it's an easy DIY job
I just checked for the 06' S65 and the oem part is only $41 for your car on partsgeek

Most likely coil pack, My SL65 did the same thing when I came close to a stop, then after awhile car ran really rough turned it off and on and it was fine. Scanned it the next day and found out it had 10 misfires lol. After replacing the ignition coils, no more random turn off issue
