CL55 vs. CL600 Which is faster?

A similar question got asked on another forum.

The answer probably has something to do with the course they compete on. In a straight line the torque advantage of the CL600 should prevail 0-60 or 1/4 mile, I would think. But on a circuit course, wouldn't the AMG's handling and brakes overcome that advantage?

I'm sure everyone has an opinion, but does anyone have reliable information on this?

I bet there isn't much of a handling difference, especially if the 600 has the amg package.

The 600 will be a bit quicker in acceleration due to its tq advantage but once the road turns the AMG car will truly be the superior machine. The 600's tip the scales at 218 more pounds than the 55's and all that mass is stuffed up front over the front end. This makes the 600's have a very nose heavy feel and they have a far larger dose of understeer when stacked up against a 55k. In addition the AMG car has different shocks and ABC settings that make it sportier than the 600. Some members around here say the 600 has the same suspension as the 55 but part numbers and literature prove them all wrong. Last I checked the AMG shocks say AMG on the side while the 600's just have a A215 part number stamped on the side.

There is no doubt a 55 is the more fun car to drive unless blasting from 0-100 is your idea of a performance test.

FYI the sport package does nothing other than add wheels and a body kit. The car drives no better than a non-sport car with AMG wheels. CL600's are the same as CL600 sports.

CynCarvin32:
Thanks for the good info. That agrees with what I read in the Mercedes brochure. I appreciate the post.

To others:
Like I said everyone has an opinion. Heck, I've got an opinion and I own a CL55. My opinion is only based on what I know, which in this case is limited to how my car drives. I've never driven a CL 600, so maybe my opinion ain't worth squat. That's why I asked for reliable information.

Maybe I just like CynCarvin32's info because it spports what I want to believe :-)

CynCarvin32 is a great source of knowledge on Mercedes vehicles. He has driven (With extended seat time in most AMG models) just about every model current and past since the 90's!

On straight line is CL600 the way faster than CL55. It reaches speed in seconds 103-115-128-134-145-156 >>> it flyes! The fastest car I've ever driven. I have also had SL55 AMG test drive (since I've ordered this car) and I think its little bit slower than CL600, but its more stable on high speeds....

I have driven them both. For me, torque and smoothness of the 600 made me enjoy it much more and the 600 felt more powerful (it is) and felt like it accelerated faster. My next CL will be a 600 in the new body.

My hands down favorite MB is the CL600.

And if you had to guess, when would you expect to see the new body CL ? I'm about ready to change away from the S-Class and I think the CL could be the right item, just loaded with "way too much horsepower"!
