Anyone interested in this project

I am trying to reduce the weight of my CLA 45 to below 1500 kgs, in addition to performance mods. In the weight department I have installed a Braille Li battery, carbon fibre hood and trunk lid, Rays G25 wheels with Pilot Sport Cup tires, Tikore titanium lug bolts, Armytrix catless downpipe and front pipe. I am also working on a full set of carbon ceramic rotors as well as a titanium catback exhaust. The next major item is to replace the sunroof glass with a polycarbonate one. It appears that the best outfit to do this is http://www.proglasswindows.com/ in Bristol IL. They want me to send them the original glass and they can duplicate it for me in Lexan. My problem is with sending them the heavy glass half way around the world from Hong Kong. If someone in the USA is interested in doing this, we can share the cost of the sample piece which can be purchased from MB in the US and shipped to IL. If we can get a small group together the price could be negotiated down a bit. Of course the sample can be resold to recover some of the cost but it will take time and effort.

In addition to the weight savings the car will also have a lower CG by removing 15 kgs or so from the top.

Let me know if you are interested.

why would you spend so much money on a car that isn't based off of a pure sports car? save your money and buy a project car if you wish to go so far with modifications. modding a CLA45 AMG to the extent you are trying to achieve just doesn't make much sense to me. I would personally mod a S2k or even a beat up evo, if you can find one for the right price. spending that kind of green on a car like the CLA will still leave you wanting more. if there was a substantial upgrade such as a bigger intercooler and turbo housing i would tell you to go that route. trying to save weight on such a heavy car just isn't the most logical thing to do in my opinion. per dollar you are going to be able to mod two cars that would most likely be able to beat the CLA45 on track and prob not heat up and burn out tires as quickly. just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your comments.

I am not trying to build a track or race car. It is my daily driver and I just want to see how far I can take this 2.0 liter engined car with the best parts that the aftermarket has to offer. It is already faster than the new C63 with the 4.0 liter biturbo engine(which costs much more than the CLA 45) and I have already surprised quite a few supercars on the road.

I guess everyone has a pet project and cost is not always the top consideration.

Cheers.

i fully support your project!

as a fellow owner i have to say id love to see the CLA with ALL OF the best the aftermarket can offer and 100% agree with the supercar statement.

I am in the US, and do want to help, but im having a hard time justifying why i would put up any money for it?

what is someone getting out of helping you send it? and what is the point of a few people sharing the cost of the MB glass that the company needs?

ill buy, and send it for you, but i will need all the money upfront...

i dont see anyone chipping in or donating ...

I am not asking anyone to put up money unless they are also interested in the Lexan roof. I have located a MB dealer in Naperville IL which is very close to the shop and they sell the OEM glass for $880 which I plan to buy and have them send it to the Lexan shop. Waiting for a reply from the shop to see if they can use it to make what I want and then send it back to the MB dealer for a refund.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

You said it bro. Life's too short, do what ya gotta do.

Please post some pix and maybe a video of the car when you get the chance. Sounds awesome.

P.S. you really don't need to send the part, look up the dimensions and specs (ask MB if it's not stated in parts catalog) and have them make it for you.

Unfortunately the glass roof is bowled and the sides are curved. I could send them a template of the border but the bowl will be impossible.

ddtung, I applaud your efforts and as most people see your mods are being extreme I myself appreciate it because I've wanted to do something similar when I had my SLK32 AMG.

Please continue with the project and I'm curious as to how much you've reduced from the mods done so far.

Here are the approximate weight savings of the mods done and planned:

DONE

CF hood and trunk lid 11kgs
Braille i34CE Li battery 16kgs
Shorai auxillary battery 4kgs
Armytrix catless downpipe and frontpipe 5kgs
Rays G25, PSC tires, Ti lug bolts 16kgs
Tire inflation kit removal, licence frame
delete, CF hood support, Ti bolts 3kgs

ORDERED

Hg 2 piece rotor kit vs OEM 10kgs
Fusion CC rotor kit vs OEM 20kgs
Ti bolts 3kgs

PLANNED

Lexan sunroof 10kgs
Ti catback 10kgs

These will put me at 1490kgs vs 1585kgs OEM.

I have to add a few kgs for the Willal ECU and intake kits, HG
engine damper, Bilstein PSS10 coilovers, and DTE pedalbox.

Also have the Rebellion S1V2 kit and TCU I can swap in.

Target is 440hp and 570Nm and a mid 3s 0-100.

You need a full locking differential, that will be the biggest reduction in your achievement for 0-100.

I like how you're going about this project. Can you PM me pricing on the Lexan pano roof? Any loss of functionality? Personally hate the Panos because they always creak and rattle at some point, also because they are heavy and at a very high center of gravity.

Great work so far!!!

Interesting build thus far, excited to see where it leads you! I do agree with others who have questioned the logic behind the weight removal though, because with Carbon brakes and sticky tires, the next step to making your car faster around the track is power. Dollar ratio wise, much easier to get an upgraded turbo and make an extra 100hp minimum which will be a more drastic improvement than all of the weight savings thus far.

Also it is only the base car that is 1585kgs. The Pano roof and other media type options adds almost another 50kgs. Cars with the pano roof have been weighed in at over 3600lbs with the base car coming in at just a hair under 3500lbs.

Once again I am not building up the car for the track.

A larger turbo for this 2 litre engine may not produce 100 more horsepower but if it did I would be concerned with the health of the engine parts as well as the ability of the transmission and chassis to handle that power.

The CF hood and trunk lid were custom ordered from Smartplus here in Hong Kong and are exact copies of the OEM parts. They have been painted body colour. Now that they have the moulds, they can offer the CF parts to anyone who is interested.

Those look great. How's fitment on them compared to your OEM pieces?

i hope you know the stock wheels are 28-29 pounds and forged wheels of similar size can be 20 pounds.

40 pounds total saved if you go forged or flow forged...
