I'm selling a wheel and tire combo but have no idea how to package it for shipping. Has anyone sold a wheel/tire combo before? If so, how did you package it? Or do you not package them at all because the tire will protect the wheel? What about the face of the wheel? I would hate for them to arrive scratched up.

Oh, I know this is going to be hard to answer but what about approximate coast to coast shipping charge for a wheel/tire combo. I have a couple of people interested in the West Coast and I'm on the East Coast.

Thanks!!

I shipped a set of 17" AMG C32 rims with tires a few months back via UPS Ground, from CA to NY and it costed me $220. Heard that FedEx Ground is cheaper.

Ahhhh,

So I guess the tires weren't mounted on the rims when you shipped them.

I bought rims/tires combo from someone in St. Louis, MO. The face of each rim had bubble wrap ( big kind) for protection. Then cardboard covered entire rim on both sides almost to the edge of the tires. Packing tape was used to hold down the edges of the cardboard to the tire. Additional packing tape was spaced out and taped across from one side of the cardboard to the other.
The bolts were put into a plastic bag with bubble wrap and taped inside on of the rims. Fedex was used and insurance for $3200. Total shipping cost was $145 from MO to CA. Rims and tires arrived safely. Hope this helps.

The tires were mounted on the rim, remeber these were 17" rims. I took bigger boxes, for like 20" rims and was able to fit them in there, and use the existing rim protectors in the box to protect the rim. Arrived safely.

Ahhhhh,

Got it, thanks for clarifying.

Anyone else done this without boxes?

just go to uhaul and buy some boxes, they have boxes that are 24-25" squares... cost for shipping wheel+tire mounted is about $50-60 EACH from coast to coast for 48 lower contiguous states.

fedex & ups have pretty similar costs, about about $3-5 diff per package at most.

whether they are 17s or 19s, the overall diameter is the same when there are tires mounted. the weight might be a little diff, but thats about it.

Thanks guys!!

That helps alot. Since I have the boxes that the wheels came in, I may just unmount the tires and keep them, and then sell just the wheels.

Appreciate it...

The Tire Rack (for example) ships wheels/tires mounted and covered on both sides by round card board, the wheels/tires and cardboard are strapped together using plastic strapping tape. Under the card board is normally some sort of soft material to protect the lip of the wheel.

Several other companies ship this way as well.

This is how I have sent and rcvd multiple sets. FYI Fed Ex ground lost one of the 4 both coming and going last time....they found each of them 2 weeks latter! DO NOT USE FED EX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They would not comp the cost, overnight'em or anything!!!!

I agree. The Tire Rack are the king of wheels and tires. If tires are mounted on the wheels, just used heavy duty cardboard to cover the diameter of the tires (both sides), and use the heavy duty packaging (filament) tape. If shipping wheels only, I would only ship if boxed and properly cushioned.
