Aftermarket Exhaust for CLE53?

Just curious are any companies working on an exhaust for the CLE53?

Yes, it should be Mercedes Benz/AMG. See the "US AMG CLE53 performance exhaust system option" thread.

Yeah, I know I was just kidding, tongue in cheek though.

The car is probably too new to have any aftermarket exhaust designed yet.

My plan is to modify what I've got, but even that'll take time.

lol! I was like ummm

My car is scheduled to get build on 11/8. I’m hoping to get it by Christmas. Please let me know what you do. I keep hearing about the exhaust is too quiet. So I want to try and add a little something to fix it.

install X-pipe would be the first move, especially if there's nothing like that already.

Remove "something" is more like it. Like a resonator or "flash suppressor" or whatever stops the bangs and is muffling the exhaust that isn't emissions related. We'll see...

Umm, the CLE53 is a straight 6 with a single turbo, so an X-pipe wouldn't be an option.

oh you're right, lol

Not even sure why that didn't click. Removing resonators and mufflers is probably the only easy option.

As far as what I've seen of MB mufflers, they're pretty big and they seem to have the exhaust flap system built-in as a whole assembly.

I'm thinking that it would be nice to keep the flaps and with whatever mods that can be done and you'd have loud and louder exhaust.

Now, from what I learned from the other "exhaust" thread is that some CLE53's DO NOT HAVE EHAUST FLAPS! It is apparently the "Switchable Sound" option. In that case there should be aftermarket exhaust systems to fix that.

Removing the resonator is not the right way as they are there for a few important reasons:

A resonator's primary function is to tune the sound frequency of a vehicle's exhaust system to create a smoother, more mellow exhaustnote:
  • Eliminates droning
A resonator cancels out sounds at specific frequencies that bounce around inside the device, which can eliminate annoying droning sounds.
  • Complements the muffler
A resonator works with the muffler to help produce the vehicle's intended sound performance
  • Reduces harsh tones
A resonator's tuning features reduce the intensity of high-frequency sound waves, which can make the exhaust sound raspy.

Sounds pretty good, the stock sound and lack of emotion is what's currently stopping me from purchasing the CLE 53. And the price tag, this needs to be dropped to C43 level of cost.

I agree with all of those resonator functions. However, based on my research, it appears that the CLE53 Exhaust System has an additional "can" (I don't know what it is yet) that is not in the C43 Exhaust System. The C43 exhaust sounded GREAT. By my logic that is the candidate for R&R with a straight pipe. All I'm doing, I think, is modifying the exhaust system to a pre-2021 AMG Exhaust System spec. As it SHOULD HAVE BEEN from the factory!

Good news, bad news…

The Good news: The system is a work of art, beautifully welded in one-piece. Nice large stainless-steel pipes too.

The Bad news: There is NO second resonator to R&R. That means no easy fix to increase exhaust sound. The only Resonator in the system is small and should stay based on the earlier Resonator function description. But, even if one wanted to remove it, the pipes leading to and from it are ovalized and will be difficult to match.

The sound quality and frequency are fine, just too quiet for my taste. The “problem” is with the mufflers’ and flaps’ arrangement. It’s completely different from my 2019 C43. As I see it, in the old C43 there is one fully muffled straight pipe and one minimally muffled valved pipe per side. In the new CLE53 there is only ONE fully muffled straight pipe on the drivers side only. The drivers side valved pipe may be minimally muffled while the passenger side has a dedicated muffler for the valved pipe.

I took pix of the system at the dealership and summed up how I see this all working in the attached pdf.

I based by assessment of the valve operation by looking at the condensation coming out or the tips under the different Dynamic Modes. The valves are half open with engine off. They’re “computer controlled” so are probably not fully open at idle for instance, but are fully open at WOT. I couldn’t check that. I’m not sure if aftermarket valve opening module would help given all of the mufflers.

Yes, there will certainly be aftermarket exhaust components and full systems available eventually, but the car is new so it’ll be a while. I wonder if the C43 mufflers will fit…

Finally, why did MB/AMG have change the exhaust system? Using the old C43 muffler/valve arrangement as-is would have been a lot cheaper than redesigning a new system. And it sounded great!

My service consultant implied that an exhaust mod might void the exhaust system warranty. No other part warranty should be affected but they're getting a bit touchy at the dealership about this stuff now.

I take no chances when it comes to the potential for voiding the warranty, although they can only void for the areas affected and not void the entire warranty itself. Nonetheless, it's very expensive to work on these cars and I would leave well enough alone whenever possible. Perhaps if you can find a dealer to install a cat-back exhaust it might be okay.

As of Jan 2025 this is the only one I have found. Its from a Chinese company, they have one video which sounds way better than stock. I was able to find review videos of different systems and people seem happy. I sent an inquiry email but I am still waiting to hear back on pricing. From what I googled it takes 1-2 months to arrive.

Here is website, video was from tik tok
