Malfunctioning Seat Belt Extender

I was cleaning my car today. Car was off. I opened the passenger door, closed it, and heard a noise came from around the B pillar and then a grinding mechanical noise. I opened the driver door and see the seat belt extender fully extended. I have these seats set all the way back, so the extender doesn’t normally come out far.

I got it back in by changing the passenger seat position, buckling the seat, and starting and stopping the car.

Anyone else ever have an issue like this?

Disappointing to have another issue and need a third dealer visit in 6 months.

What is the issue? You opened the door, closed it, and the car thought someone was sitting in the seat and did what it was supposed to do.

Am I missing something? You didn't say how much time transpired between closing it and opening it again for the second time. I'm guessing it was fairly quick, hence the issue you noted. I can't say that the seat belt extender is exactly a smart type functionality, so maybe it was confused between having the door open vs closed vs open again.

Perhaps I did not explain it well. These extenders only activate when the car is running, the door opens, and then closes. When it does extend, mine come out only 2 inches because the seat is pushed all the way back. In this instance, the car was off, seat extender fully extended, and the motor continued to “grind”.

Okay, that explains it better and frames it up. I know how they work and I would say that was a weird occurrence and an example of how it shouldn't work. Does it do it all the time? Or just that once?

Maybe the car just wants to go for a drive. LOL

First time it happened. I did get a video that I’ll present to the dealer next time I take it in, but it might be a while.

thank you for responding to my two threads!

It happened to me as well. It was after a wash as well. When I got in after washing and drying the exterior, it was that same thing, where it was waaay too far out. :-/ I had to literally- Manually push it back into place. I hasn't happened since, but I thought I'd let you know you aren't the only one.

thank you for letting me know. I wish I could get the extender to come out farther in normal operation.

separate question, what does this symbol mean when I start the car?

The color of the symbol is intended to help you quickly identify the status of the rear seat belt.

The rear seat belt status display in the driver display is a reminder that all vehicle occupants must wear their seat belts correctly.

Every time the vehicle is switched on, the rear seat belt status display informs you for a certain amount of time which rear seat belt is not fastened.

Possible color of the symbol:

  •
    • Grey: the rear seat belt is not fastened.
  •
    • Green: the seat belt tongue of a rear seat belt is engaged in the seat belt buckle of the displayed seat.
  •
    • Red: the person in the rear seat has unfastened their seatbelt.
If a person unfastens a seat belt in the rear passenger compartment while the vehicle is motion, the rear seat belt status display appears again.

Is this the symbol that alerts you the rear passengers are not buckled? Perhaps there is no weight sensor only the seatbelt sensor so if there is no passenger but not buckled, it might still show?
