Turning audio system “Off”

I cannot find instructions to turn the audio system “off.” (I only listen to music loaded on a USB drive)

I know how to mute the system but after stopping the car and then restarting the audio system goes back to playing music.

I am taking the car in for the A service and I want to completely turn off the system before giving it to the service rep.

There is no off function, except for powering down the entire Infotainment system. Mute is how you turn off the audio, but MBUX to this day is buggy. It should stay muted. In my 2019 if I mute the audio, it's still muted the next time I start the car as it should be. Alternatively, you can turn the volume down to zero, or select an audio source that doesn't play anything w/o another device connected such as Bluetooth.

Ok thanks.

I will select a non-playing audio source when I want the audio “off”

In my case the MBUX 3.3 update fixed the remember last setting on mute issue. If I mute the car before turning it off it stays muted when I start again. This is new to the 3.3 update. Others have noted the 3.3 update changed/broke/eliminated some of the online music apps but since I don't use these I only pass this along.

I am thinking I may be spending some time for my A service tomorrow if they update the software. I’ll bring reading material…

"Off" had to be eliminated in the era of touch screens and no mechanical buttons, because once off, the screen had no way to display "On". Design engineers are now mostly bald from scratching their heads over this dilemma, and see no solution yet. I'm just thankful that the audio system doesn't default to German polka music upon startup in the same way that start/stop and lane assist always default to active.

I just leave a USB drive plugged in at all times.

Since 2018 (C43, E53, & CLE53) I have left a USB or SDHC drive in a socket in the console.
1% of the time the car fails to recognize the USB bus on startup, and I have to remove the drive and re-insert it.
I maintain the data on my computer then copy the files to the USB drive.
The directory structure looks like;
\Music\artist_name\album_name\song_name
\Playlists\playlist_name
\Videos\series_name\video_name
☆1. I use an editor on the playlists to make the path start with \Music ...
☆2. I have used various programs to create playlists. Hand editing to add or remove songs.
☆3. I have found no good instructions on how to do this and MBUX has changed the rules slightly.

P. S. When I take my car in for service. I leave the German version of Lili Marlene by Marlene Dietrich playing.

I ripped all my music collection (about 2,500 disc’s) to FLAC lossless format. I rip as single tracks and full albums as one track. I use these files in my cars and Roon Nucleus + server in my home audio systems. Once I rip a CD, SACD, DVD-Audio or BluRay disc I pretty much store it and never open it again.

Using my desktop computer I created folders for my USB drives in all my cars. Folders are organized by music genre’s - Classic Rock, Progressive Rock, Jazz, Etc. I edit the metadata to present band name, track name and album art. The MBUX screen presents all my data clearly and correctly. I particularly like my “Crankers” folder.

I also added a 12-inch subwoofer driven by a 500-watt Class A/B amp to the factory system. The system now sounds incredible.

Lastly, I do not believe MB cannot put an “off” icon on the media screen. I do not want the screen off as one can current do only via total display off from the center console button. So just leave the screen “on” but put an “off” icon on the Media screen as well.

I've not experienced any of this on my '19 G550, but I do find it annoying that after backing out of garage, the rear view camera remains in the display for about a minute after shifting into drive, and during this time, the audio system controls are rendered inoperative. Can't change channels, tracks, or media source, although the volume works. Naturally, none of the documentation (there was no guide provided specifically for the media system) explais any of this as normal, but it is filled with mostly useless warnings.

The camera stays up until you reach a certain speed. I think it's above 10 mph or something like that. You should be able to close it manually using the back button on the steering wheel, though, or the center console if you have one.
