nah...the dealer is telling the truth - they really can't be reprogrammed i had to pay that $275 too. but hey, the new ones are smaller and lighter so it might be worth it

Yeh im pretty sick of the big, ugly '98 key too. My dad's 2000 E430's key is alot smaller and has the silver star on it. At this point im not willing to pay $275 though.

yea, you might want to just buy an extra metal key (i think $30-$40 from the dealer) to just have incase your key gets locked in somehow

if you are trying to change keys because it is cosmetically damaged or the clip is broken, you can easily change the houising with some thin tip pliers and 10 minutes.

$136 for the new key

I have an '00 CLK320 and just got a new replacement key for my car. The dealer only charged me $136 for the key with the metal valet key (actually two separate items). The electronic key is slightly smaller with the L shaped valet key. Works great and no problems.

I wish they would come up with a "dual purpose" key that has a switch to select between two separate cars, for two MB households.

**Disclaimer*** I bear no responsibility for what happen to your keys if you do this

What i did was opened the key, used a pair of thin pliers and ripped the circuit board out ( I got sick of using the clips). Next, I ripped the circuit board with the pliers out of the key with the new housing and placed it in.

Then I just closed up the key and it worked. I realize now I should have kept the clips is because sometimes the circuit board does move causing the key not to work, however, it is good 99% of the time and the problem can easily be rectified by a) either being more patient with the clips or b) using sticky tac to hold it in place.
