The rears are the wrong size. You would want the second number to be 35, not a 40.

i have 18x8.5 lm5 whheels on my car with 265/35/18 in the rear and 225/40/18 in front. I tried 245/40/18 in front but they did rub, so i went with 225's. I am not sure about 235's in front but I think they will rub.

225s up front with 265s rear would actually induce understeer. I recomend a 235/40/18F and 265/35/18R.

The first number 235 is the tread width. The larger the number, the wider the tire. The second number is a measure of the tire wall depth/height. So a 235/40 tire is taller than a 235/35. It's basically a percentage of the tire width. In other words, the tire wall height of a 235/40 is 40% of the 235 width measurement. That's my understanding. You can research more at www.tirerack.com.

No, yours are perfect because you have 19" wheels. Let me explain briefly:

17" CLK wheels: the 2nd number is 45F and 40R
18" CLK wheels: the 2nd number is 40F and 35R
19" CLK wheels: the 2nd number is 35F and 30R

As you can see, as the wheel diameter increases 1", the height drops by 5.

Thanks

Ben

Why do the rear tires have a smaller diameter than the fronts?

Why do the rear tires have a smaller diameter than the fronts? Is there some sort of physics behind that?

Question Hey mach430!

I am planning on purchasing 18x8.5F and 18x9.5R wheels. What are the best tire sizes to get without any suspension modifications; and no rubbing?

Mach, what I have also observed is that, when I visit the Eurpean MB sites that supports MB "CLK" modifications. They use only 18inch wheels with very huge tires and suspension mods. Then, I say to myself, "Why are these guys hopping to 19inch wheels?" I guess, to each his own .

Anyway, If you could answer my question I will very much appreciate it, thanks

Ben,

I have 235/35/18 rear and 225/40/18 front. I understand that you think that this combo will induce understeer. I am amenable to changing to 235/40/18 in front. My question, will it rub? I have 18x8.5 LM5 whhels in front and I did try 245/40/18 in front and it did rub. Do you think 235's will not?
