My question: do motor or tranny mounts always have visual symptoms when they go bad? In other words, can they look OK but be bad without looking like it?

I know from cruising the forum that a few of you guys have replaced your motor mounts on your CLKs for rough idle. When you replaced them, did they exhibit any damage or did they look fine even though they were causing the rough idle? Can the mounts look alright even when bad?

I just took my 430 to the stealership and they said the mounts look fine. No leaking or clearance issues. I've still got a rough idle and I've changed plugs, filters (air and fuel), MAF, cleaned injectors, and run top end cleaner but a slight rough idle is still there. 46K on the clock.

Any help appreciated.

Hey Fellas...quick question...what exactly is a motor mount and a harmonic balancer? Any pictures for reference?

Also, I check online for MB recalls for and 01 CLK 430, but didn't find any factory recalls. Is the harmonic balancer recalled for my 01?

Motor mounts are the mounting points between the engine and the chassis. The harmonic balancer is connected to the driveshaft and offsets vibrations caused by torque. Google these terms for pictures of said parts.

Your local Mercedes service dept. can answer your question on whether or not your VIN falls within the range for a recall.

Hmmmmm I thought the harmonic balancer was on the front of the car?? I thought it offset the crannkshaft vibrations somehow? Learning everyday!

be correct. The harmonic balancer balances out the crankshaft.Part of the crankshaft pulley on the front of the engine.

Recall applied to M112 and M113 engines for a few early years. Check with dealer by your vin number if somehow it has managed to escape being done if it was one subject to the recall.
Good idea to inspect yearly even if it is not a recalled one.The rubber gets dry and they go to pieces and with it the front of the engine goes.
