They call me Rattle Killer

Finally killed the last two rattles in my CLK and I had to tell someone about it. As I would drive the car it seemed these noises were mocking me. Telling me I had paid way to much for a cheap *** car with more rattles that the clapped out Toyota I used to have. I was on a mission.

Since the weather got cold I have been noticing a constant rattling in the general area of the glove box. I finally got the chance to take the car apart yesterday and am proud to say the rattle is dead.

I've been trying to figure this one out for about two weeks by pressing on various interior pieces, the glove box door, dash panels, etc and finally figured out that pressing the recirc button would make the rattling sound stop.

I started by removing the glove box unit. Removing four screws from the inside of the glove box allows you to remove the door and interior as a unit, providing pretty clear access to the inside of the dash. I turned the key on and found the recirc door by pressing the button and watching to see what
moved. The door is in the upper right side when you look in the opening. It appeared that the loose end of a cable tie might be pressed against the glove box or recirc door when everything was assembled so I snipped the the excess off and reassembeled the glove box.

I also laid down on the passenger side floor and looked up under the dash. I removed the large square cover over the blower motor and dumped out some junk that included two small pebbles, some leaf bits, bug parts and some fine sand.

Next, I attacked the rattle in the passenger door. When I played the radio or CD, the bass would make a rattling sound coming from the area where the lower door pocket panel joins onto the main door panel at the middle of the door. I could also make it rattle by tapping the door panel in this area with my finger.

I started by removing the courtesy light from the bottom of the door and shining a flashlight up into the door panel. Tapped the panel and the noise was gone. Installed the light and tapped the panel and it was back. Turns out the wires were rattling on the inside of the panel. A few strategic bends to the wires, inserting a little soft felt and this rattle was dead also.

Took the wife out for dinner last night and all was quiet. Having vanquished the demons, my enthusiasm for the drive has returned. Believe it or not, i now have a rattle and squeake free CLK Cab.

I just killed a rattle today too. Everytime I hit a bump or bass would hit from the stereo I would hear metal clanging. I checked everywhere and could never figure out where it was coming from. One day a friend of mine hit the moonroof slide and I heard the rattle. I looked in between the cover and the glass and saw that one of the arms that is part of the sunroof mechanics was completely off and sliding around up there. I got a wire hanger retrieved it and snapped it back into place. Abracadabra no more rattles.

Guess I'm lucky. My CLK 430 is totally silent and hope it stays that way.

Mine is mostly quiet. I've killed the rattles that were in the seats by trimming some of the plastic off of the plastic parts on the side of the seat, but i still have a TON of rattling in the center console, whenever i go over rough road it sounds like the thing sounds like an old mattress. Any ideas on how to take it apart and insulate it so that it wont do this? The squeaks are coming from all over, but mainly up around the AC controlls.

I never noticed any rattles in my car until my battery died. I don't know how to re-code the radio, so I've drove without music for the first time.

On a side note, anyone know where I can get the radio code for my car?

And Velvet, Nice job!!!!
