Can't lock the trunk with the mechanical key

As I am a new owner and new to this forum, I have many questions. Of which, i think this one may have been answered, but I can't find that particular post.

The issue? I can't seem to be able to turn the mechanical key clockwise in the trunk in order to lock it.

Can anyone help me with this one? (or direct me to the proper post)

Thanks again!

does it lock?

Well, I dropped off my car this morning at W.I. Simonson Mercedes in Santa Monica, CA. And when i called back to check up on the car, they said locking the trunk with the mechanical key is not a feature available on this car (2002 CLK 430 Coupe).

Can anyone offer their experience with this? Can you lock your trunk with the little key(ie., so the valet guy can't open it from the inside or with the remote)?

Thanks!

QUESTION:

I only got 2 smart keys....is there a 3rd "valet key" that I should get when I purchase my 02 CLK430?

I think all you get on new Mercedes are the two smart keys.

I don't think there is a "valet" key any more - you lock the trunk and glovebox with the metal key and take that with you, leaving the main key with the valet.

slight miscommunication...

Sorry for the miscommunication....

When I say valet key, I'm referring to the small mechanical key attached to the SmartKey. I can use that key to lock the glove box and the door, but for the life of me, I can't use that key to lock the trunk.

And the Dealership says that the key cannot lock the trunk at all. Basically, they are saying, there is no way of actually locking the trunk with the mechanical key.

Can any of you lock the trunk with the small mechanical key (the one inside the SmartKey). Please state your vehicle model also...

Thanks for your insight!

'01 CLK 55
I just went into the garage and tried the mechanical key in the trunk lock of my '01 CLK 55... Tail piece up, turn clockwise and I'm locked out. I speculate that the '02 and newer cars do not have the ability to manually lock the trunk as it would render the inside emergency trunk release ineffective.('02 vehicles onward) As per new DOT(?) laws for U.S. vehicles, an emergency inside trunk release is required in the event of one becoming locked in the trunk during a kidnapping or kids playing in the trunk and becoming trapped.... I presume I'm screwed if I get "jacked" and thrown in the trunk. I hope my wife thinks highly enough of me to pay the friggin' ransom.

Oh, got you.....I tried on my 02 CLK430, it wouldn't lock it. And I also remembered when I picked up the car, my sales told me you can use the mechanical key to lock glove comparment but NOT the trunk. It is a safety precaution in case somebody get locked in the trunk....... Otherwise, the trunk release button inside has no effect

....'02 C240 loaner also did not allow the use of the mechanical key to lock OR unlock the trunk. The electronic key and electric trunk release was inoperable and I wanted to use the trunk to no avail, so this can be a double edged issue with '02 cars foward... I'll risk being trapped for the mechanical capability.

awesome....

thanks LAMAY123

i was afraid that the locking mechanism was broken. so is there any way to prevent the valet from snooping through your trunk since we can't lock the '02 and newer CLKs/Benzos...

Also, lets say, if someone was to get locked in the trunk, can't they technically go through the back seats? Just pull the lever and crawl through (i believe split fold down seats are standard - right?)....

I guess there's no way to prevent a valet going thru your trunk. Just don't leave any valuable items and lock them in the glove compartment if you can (i know it's kinda small).

The folding back seats are standard. But let's just say you got robed, locked in the trunk, and theft is driving the car trying to get away. I don't think it's such a good idea to climb back through the back seat. But technically, I think you can do that.

Apparently, every CLK comes with what is called an "operator's manual." This "operator's manual" has all kinds of useful information on all the functions of the car. It clearly states on page 37 (for '02 CLK430 and CLK55):

"2 Separate locking of trunk - remove mechanical key in this position (only vehicles built prior 09/01)."

The 2 refers to the 2 in the diagram, which is located at the 3 o'clock position on the trunk lock.

Haha, owner's manual? That concept is too foreign to most of the folks who post here.
