Spare key made, but...

Had a spare (seller only had 1 set) made for my 2000 CLK 430, both electronic and slider key. The electronic key works fine, but the slider key does not; it goes in the keyhole but does not turn either way for both the driver door and the trunk. It works on the glove compt. lock.
I called the dealer; he says the keys are made for the VIN and that it may be that the locks were changed, for whatever the reason, by the past owners. I am the 3rd. He offered me a refund for the cost of the key ($50).
I'm wondering if it would be better to return the key to the dealer and have them send it back to the locksmith (Dallas, Texas, I think) and have another one cut.
Any other ideas?

Your key cost $50???

If it works for the glove compartment then I would think it should work for the door too. Are you turning the key hard enough? The older style infrared key really takes some effort to turn when opening the door.

give it another try, sometimes it just takes several attempts....try to also apply some downward pressure with your hand on your trunk and simultaneously turning the key.

Tried it again...and again; same thing no matter how hard I turn the key. Tried pushing down on the trunk lid, no go.

$50 was the list price; MB dealer charged me $30 and change. The electronic key cost me $168.

The one noticeable difference about the new spare is that both fob and mechanical slider key are physically smaller than the old one.

Thanks for your inputs.

Actually, out the door, I paid $214.21 for both the electronic key and the slider (mechanical) key. I had the option of just getting the electronic key for $168 + tax; but decided to get the slider key too.

Anyway, I tried some local locksmiths but they couldn't help me because they don't even carry the blank. So I went back to the dealer and they are going to send the newly cut slider key back along with my old key to see if they can come up with a good cut. I pointed out the difference in size between the old and the new keys and they said that the old ones are not available anymore: too big. Also, compared to my old key, the new one just wasn't cut as clean.

Oh well, just got to wait and see.

Um... 250 300 sounds kinda high. The Carol person said she paid 214 with tax for electronic and slider or the blade. That sounds about right cuz I'm in Oregon and we don't have sales tax. You should call our dealership here and order it with your vin and see if they could like mail it to you or something.

Final update: Took the unworkable blade key back to the dealer Monday morning and they sent it back along with my workable blade key to the locksmith in Texas.

Picked up the new key today and it works like it should. They also sent the bad one back too; don't know what for.

Thanks again for your inputs and comments.
