Best Navi system for '99 430?

Hey yall,
I keep getting lost in new jersey, so the time has come to spend money on a nav system. What are my options? I've seen the ML retrofits before and they do look good, especially if i can reuse my cd changer... any other ideas though?

If you guys do get a navi I will suggest you to go with an aftermarket one it will be so much better.

My Pioneer Avic-N2 hasn't gave me a problem yet. Comes with all kinds of features as well. Like they say you get what you pay for and I'm going to recommend an aftermarket unit as well. Might as well go all out right? They came out with the N3 which just gives more points of interest and has a new design that's about it compared to the N2. Nowadays the N2 can be bought for under a grand which is really reasonable compared to what I paid for it a year and half ago..Eclipse is a good system as well just a little more pricey but you get a 7" screen instead of a 6.5 do a search you will find many nav systems, its really what you want out of one.

Any good picks for 2din aftermarket ones? I'm not a big fan of flip up headunits.

I've had Eclipse, Pioneer and Alpine. I am running Alpine now. all these aftermarket navi headunits pretty much does every thing now, plays dvd, gets TV, ect, ect, but the real difference is the navigation software.

I have found that the Alpine interface is the easiest to use. also the POI database is the best out of those that I mentioned.

I was so frustrated with the Eclipse unit that I sold it after 3 months of use. I really could not find anything in there.

For example, I was looking for nearest BestBuy. I tried alll the different combinations and nothing shows up... nearest Albertson.... nothing...

If you don't care about the POI, then just choose 1 that you like base on how the unit looks. because like I said earlier, they pretty much all do the same thing.

Alpine looks pretty cool. Hook up some amps, components and nice 12" subs and you're good to go!

i recently got the N2 Pioneer off ebay for my CLK and it works great... You'll have to solder two points (very close together and underneith a sticker on the back side of the N2 unit) together to get the N2 working when you are driving though....

Where did you install the N2t ?
My 00 430CLK w/ hands free phone,
has an empty bin in the console post under the climate control.
Did you install it there ?
Did you replace the radio, what ?
Can you post a photo of your installation ?

Just took a few snap shots when i had the chance to

Yes i installed it under the climate control console. Yes the N2 Replaces the stock radio.. i also installed the IPOD control unit along with a AV line - both coming out of my glove compartment so I can keep the Navigation DVD in the player at all times and just run the music and movies from my IPOD =)

Did you replace the amp when you did this new Pioneer system?

Also, this did render your steering wheel (radio) controls useless did it not?

Nope did not replace the AMP. And yes the steering wheel controls for the radio will not work after the install... but there is something that you can buy plug into my MB steering wheel control that will send an infrared signal to the N2 to make the stations change/volume. I opp'ed not to do it and to just use a remote control =)

Oh ok. one last question. Does that thing flip up ok when the car is in 'park'? (In other words, on deployment, does the screen 'miss' the shifter when the car is in park?)

Nothing gets in the way... =)... The N2 really fits nicely ..

i remember seeing on another forum (forgot forum name) some guy put the climate control where the radio was and put his N2 where the climate control was. So if you plan on getting the N2 that might be something you would want to look at... =)

I'm thinking that if I were to replace my radio,
that would foul up my hands free phone.
Any ideas ?

I know the Pioneer AVIC-Z1 has a Bluetooth interface (don't know if the N2 does) so if you get the microphone (optional?) with the Z1, you can do the hands free thing but not using the MB cellie system. Your phone would be bluetoothing the radio, using the Z1's mike for talk and the car's speakers for listening. I almost bought that baby for that reason alone. Too bad I can't afford it right now. Damn taxes....

You can get a great deal from Crutchfield right now with code: 3A185. It gives you 15% off 3 or more pioneer items at $45 or more. I ordered a Pioneer Avic-D3 from Crutchfield, along with the new Bluetooth adaptor, Ipod connection, and sirius satelite receiver for under $1050 shipped!

P.S. They also give you a FREE Pioneer backup camera. ($250 value) I already have one, so I'll probably sell it on fleabay or here maybe for $150. Which brings my total cost for Nav, Sat Radio, Bluetooth, and touchscreen interface for about $900!

what were the 3 items you chose that allowed the 15% off? i used:
Pioneer AVIC-D3 DVD Navigation Receiver
Pioneer CD-BTB200 Bluetooth Adapter
Pioneer GEX-P920XM XM Satellite Radio
and then the free Pioneer ND-BC2 Universal Reverse Rear-View Camera

are these the same you used? how u got it for under 1050 shipped?

and ne clue y its saying "This item is NOT recommended for your vehicle.
Vehicle: 1999 Mercedes Benz CLK430 Coupe (change)"

also, anyone know the difference between the avic D2 and D3...i kno the D3 has the bluetooth and ipod (dono if d2 does too) , but i like how the D2 has 2 disc slots while D3 only has one....ne other major differences?

thanks
