2001 CLK430 vs 2003 Cobra SVT

Sooo..
2001 clk430 314 RWHP

here's how it happened.

Pull up to the light, guy next to me has a cobra svt, his buddy looks at me and points forward, i nod.

we floor it, i had a really good start, out in front 2 car lengths by 70 mph, and we are both going about 90 when we pass a highway patrolman going the other direction, and he's booking it towards the next U-turn.

i flip a nut and soil my underwear (kidding), and i look over and the other guys are freaking out too and the sign we just passed said ELM* road, 1 mile, which at my current speed of 130.. will take me about 25 seconds.
the other guys are braking for some reason, and im like **** it, if i'm going to get arrested.. might as well make it worth it.. so i keep going.

i turn on the side road and go down this winding road in the middle of nowhere (lets just say somewhere in rural missouri) and end up in someones driveway, where i sat for about 10 minutes.

finally i clear my thoughts and go back towards the highway. about 1/4 mile past the exit, there are 3 highway patrol cars pulled over a blue cobra svt....

talk about ****ing luck.

How could you get that much of an increase off of a chip and exhaust? I would say maybe 314 net hp with those mods? Am I missing something here? Plus an SVT cobra is throwin down 390 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. I'm kinda doubting this story.

lol yeah a chip and exhaust will get you 5-10 horses at the flywheel (less at the wheels) if you're lucky.

Most chips I've seen for the 208 don't add any hp (and in some cases lose hp) on the dyno.

Exhaust if just a cat-back is good for sound only.

Stock CLK's dyno @ around 214 at the wheels - so either he meant to type a 2 instead of a 3 or he thinks he's making an extra 34 with his bolt ons by the "275 stock + 25 for chip and 14 for exhaust so I've gotta be making 314 even though I haven't dyno'd it" logic.

I agree with CLKFREAK even at the flywheel thats a little much let alone to the wheels. And isnt the eisenmann for the w208s only for sound? But yeah, very lucky gotta watch out for those low profile lights on the cops.

Wow no ****? I thought the 430's 275 hp was already AT the wheels.. I didn't know that was flywheel.
I've never dyno'd my car, so y'all are right about the hp thing. The story is true, though. Using the estimated increases from the mods.. that's how I got 314.

Yeah, the SVT cobra has 390/390. Maybe he sucked at shifting, it was a dude probably 20 y/o.

I have a clk55 and have trouble out running those cars, NO WAY your 430 beat an SVT. He probably wasn't racing. He should have mopped you up.

If he wasn't racing... I guess he just revs up to 6,000 RPM for kicks.. and drives over 120 mph for kicks..

I think I already said this, it's possible he didn't know when to shift, or wasn't that good at it.

I'm just saying it was insane. forget if it was SVT or not, I was racing a car over 120mph and a cop saw us. i got away. end of story.


just out of curiousity, would anyone here take a 2003 SVT cobra OVER a clk430, as a car to own? When I got my car, I had the option of the following:
2001 clk430 (bought)
2003 mustang SVT cobra
2001 BMW 330Ci
2001 Audi TT 225 hp

Of course I went with the benz (applause..) But I'm thinking of trading it in in the coming year (at least 6 months from now)
trying to keep it under $27,000
has to be a european car (BMW, Benz, Audi)
obviously going for used. performance is VERY important, looks are VERY important, gas mileage... NOT important (lol)

what should I look at?

No matter how bad he is at shifting, he should have tore you up. Maybe it was a V6?? Anyways. Who knows.

Rebadget v6 maybe or he was just using you as a designated decoy/popo bait to drive fast (I do that all the time).

It depends on what kind of cobra it was guys... only the 03-04 cobra's were 390-390 the others were not supercharged and were a lot slower., I owned a 03 before my benz, it was stolen thats how I got my car. Stupid fast with about 2k in upgrades, but the build quality was horrible. Even though my 430 is slow, I enjoy it more.

Yea...I drove a 2k4 SVT cobra. the 390 hp is actually underrated. its puttin out some serious power. It's also not a big luxury car. Those cars are FAAST. Our clk's are fun and cool, but unless it's supercharged, we don't have a shot at beating one of those.

However, they look pretty similar to the 01 and 02 (same overall body style), so it could have been a slower one. I think they're only like 320 hp, which should still beat us. But they do have manual transmission only, so they easily coulda sucked at driving.

Sweet story either way...congrats on not getting caught!!
