original alarm system

Heya.

I'm currently waiting for my car from the dealer.
Just bought an 98 CLK320, "sport" ... it says.
Alarms system seems incorporated with the radio, but the radio is being thrown out, cause no-one knows the code for it anymore.

So, here are my questions, I hope some of you guys can help me with:

1) Will the alarm system work without that radio?
2) What does the alarm system cover? (windows breaking, trunk, cabin...)
(I know it has a startcontroller of some sorts)
3) Should I change it for something else, in that case, what can you reccomend?
(I plan to have a GPS tracing device inplanted too)

The car was used in Germany btw, I don't know if that makes a difference in alarm system used.

Ah, that is nice to know, that answers my first question. Thanks!

Is the alarm sensitive enough to register trunk intrusion or glass breaking?

I had an aftermarket shock sensor incorporated into the stock alarm...works great. I have it on high cause the Benz is heavy that you really need to bump the car hard to set it off. Now on high…it goes off when you kick the wheels or hit the window (I dont think the stock system registers this). Ps…the garbage truck does not set it off…so no waking the neighbors.

My radio code was typed on the top of the radio when I pulled it out. My alarm works fine without my factory radio. No problem.

This sounds interesting.
Could you tell me the brand of the sensor, and did you install it your self?

I am still waiting for my car, looks like its gonna take 2-3 more weeks before everything is in order. The dealer offered me a deal on a Webasto Top C and the GPS alarm system installed, for about 5050 USD. I think its way too much, as I can get it about 1200 USD cheaper at another shop. Unfortunatly, they have a long wait before they can take the car.

How much!?!? $5000 USD? Hell the car is not worth much more than $10,000 why spend so much on an alarm?

hmm old thread you responded to

Well, the car might not be worth more than 10.000 US dollars at your place, but here in Denmark, we are getting screwed by special taxes on cars, and here my car is worth about 80.000 US dollars.

Wobert

Ps. just to compare, our normal salary taxes can go up to 67%, and gas is at the moment a little above 9 US dollars per gallon

Holy smokes...

Yeah.. I'm trying to beat the bushes and find a way to make my alarm stop pissing me off. I'd rather drive my truck than deal with the alarm BS every time I park.
