I've never heard of anyone needing a CLK55 MAF for the CLK55 air cleaner assembly. Besides, the MAF attaches to the throttle body. The throttle body on a 2001/2002 CLK430 is the same size (although a different part number) as a CLK55. Why would the MAF be smaller if the TB is the same size?
I'd grab a ruler.

i believe that's it. i tried it one time, but didnt try to make further mods to make it fit. i think it could be adapted with a custom spacer w/ the same type rubber gasket

I would not recommend a new MAF. The MAF for a 2002 CLK430, 2003 CLK500, and 2003 CLK55 are all the same part number. There is a difference in the throttle body though. Since the MAF bolts to the TB, the TB effectively positions the MAF. I'd follow da guitarist’s lead and build a spacer. How's this for a new ad, "HOME DEPOT, the fabricator's first stop."
The plot thickens . . . . . .
Guitarist, why were you trying to fit a W209 CLK55 air cleaner on your W208 CLK55? I've heard of people fitting a W209 CLK500 air cleaner on a CLK430. The larger filtering area of the CLK500 should equal more flow. The CLK500 and the W209 CLK55 use the same filters. Are the W209 CLK55/CLK500 filters even bigger than those on the W208 CLK55?

Sounds like you could use a silicone hose coupler. I'd measure the MAF and the air box opening. Then I'd try to get a feel for how big a gap I'm trying to make up (how long the coupler should be), and head down to a home improvement store and make the thing out of their rubber hose stock. After making it, and ensuring it fits, I'd visit my local silicone supply house and buy some hose in the size I need. With the left over silicone, you could sell adapter kits to the 430 faithful. Alternatively, siliconeintakes dot com sells this stuff, but that's the pricier rout.
As an even cheaper alternative, you could remove the tabs on the bottom of the airbox, ensure that the airbox and MAF seat, and then try to work with the tabs until it fits properly. Bending, cutting, or swapping the tabs from the 430 airbox may work. Any truth to the rumor that the upper and the lower sections of the airbox can be swapped? No huh. Man, some people should stop PM'g rumors with the hope that I'll post them.
You ARE taking pictures for the rest of us slackers, right?

I just got the 55. i had a silver 430 until last month. i found the whole airbox (think it was from an sl or slk, but i think it was the same as the 209 box) for like $100 and thought it was worth a try. shortly thereafter i sold it, i bought the 208 clk55 airbox, which i need to list for sale now actually.
i think building a spacer would be fairly easy, but didnt have the time to deal with it.
