Dealer Prices

Ok, I'm curious how badly my local Maryland MB dealer is trying to rip me off. I know indy shops are cheaper, but does anyone have any idea if these prices are reasonable even for the dealer? Prices are parts and labor:

Front Wheel Bearings $750.00
Transmission Service $525.00
Repair leaking rear diff $750.00

I feel like I have read on here people getting this type of work done for much cheaper even at the dealer...

All these things can be done on your own for very little money!!! You will need jack stands and a jack but they can be bought as a combo for cheap.

The rear diff takes a bit of muscle to handle when taking it off and putting it back on but its worth the money saved. The only thing that you will have to buy for this is the special sealant that MB uses (one tube) and the synthetic rear diff fluid that they sell as well. 8o bucks MAX i think.

go to mars auto group in northern va, bout an hour away from you, im close to baltimore too. I take both my cars there and he does a super job, like i said before he worked at american service center for ten years, he has an Masters in business, and his whole team is friendly and very helpful. He does transmission services from 99 to 139, and all his prices are half of wot the dealer charges. check out his site marsautogroup.com and call him. i speak so good on him bc he is so honest and truthful and i believe in it. Tell him omar referred you.

Thats a good price on the transmission with filter and fluid!! Hell I would have taken it in at that price and saved time myself!

At Mercedes-Benz of Valencia (which is on the opposite coast, but is a dealer and can be used for comparison), a transmission service is $189. I had my rear diff sealed under warranty, so I can't give you an exact price. However, the job was complete in a few hours and these are the parts included:
  • Two seal rings. Part number 025-997-26-47 at $4.90 each
  • 1 tube of sealant. Part number 003-989-98-20-10 at $20
These are Mercedes-Benz part numbers and current Mercedes-Benz retail prices. If your dealer said $400 or $500, maybe, but $750 sounds high.

Personally, I'd shop the work. Aside from the other prices, I've done wheel bearings. Two kits are $50, and with the car on the rack it can be done in 90 minutes by a slow worker. If you needed a steering knuckle, that would be a different story (knuckles list at $550 per side).

Wow! They definately sound much cheaper....but are they using MB fluids? How can they charge $150 for the transmission service when I thought just the fluid cost that much???
