it cant go up forever, and it cant go down forever, for me, the stock market being so far down right now is the greatest thing that could ever have happened to me, as i am 19, and ready to start investing my money, what a great time to invest!

Good for you! Investing is the right thing to do. The money you put away today will make you more money than the money you put away tomorrow.
As for not understanding? Try putting money into the market for 20 years. And in a very short time your portfolio shifted one decimal place to the left. (Simple math $10M is now $1M, $100K is now $10K, $1000 is now $100, $100.00 is now $10.00) Then you will begin to understand.
Your plans for a comfortable retirement and your hobbies come to a screeching halt. I'm not saying that there is no money to be made in the market. It just takes longer.
