2000 CLK 430 Convertible, Issues?
I am considering a 2000 CLK430 cabrio, are there any issues that I should be aware of with this car? Im looking at ones with low miles (~20K). All input would be appreciated.
Thanks
Other than a couple of replacements of the Nav. system in the first year, I've not had an issue since then. I've owned more than my fair share of "rag tops" through the years, but none have ever even come close to the build, comfort, and pure driver pleasure I get every time I get behind the wheel of mine!
I live down in Sunny Florida nowdays, so I might get more top down weather than you might be able to enjoy up there, but it's just fantastic to own and drive such a wonderful "rag top".
Oh coarse, your mileage may vary!
Let me know if I can offer any more info to your decision making?
Jim
You used to live in Northern Virginia? Where about? There really arent too many woods around here anymore, everywhere you look subdivisions are going up and the price of land and houses are absolutely ridiclous. I think down in FL you will definetely have more top down time.
Is the navigation based on a DVD or is it a pay service? I would really like to get Nav. because the head unit looks better (IMO) and having a single load CD upfront is a lot more convienent then having a 6 disc in the trunk. However, finding 2K cabrios with Nav. seems to be pretty hard.
Thanks for the advice and look forward to hearing what else you have to say.
Thanks again,
I grew up in No. Va. and went to Ft. Hunt HS down the GW Parkway. Left there after VN war in '73 and I've only been back once for a 30 yr. class reunion.
Too crazy up there for me. Left Round Hill, Va. in 73 and never looked back; been here ever since.
Command is great, as well as multi contour seats if you can. the top is fantastic, mine doesn't make a sound even at over 90 mph ( not that I've ever driven that fast!) air and water tight and a glass back window. Most amazing rag top I've ever seen, or not seen when the top is down!
Jim
Thanks for the thoughts. Since the COMAND is CD based, where do you load the CD (in a rear changer or up front with the head unit) and I am assuming it can play audio CD's up front as well, correct?
Thanks
Jim-
It is kind of congested up here, especially since AOL and all the tech firms moved out to the Dulles corridor, but just because its busy doesnt mean its bad. You should come back up, at least for a visit. Its hard enough trying to find a 2000 with COMAND, but if I can find the mulit-contour seats, Ill go for it.

You can do either or, but not both at the same time; Nav. system needs CD in Command unit to get info, that's why the external CD player is nice as that allows CD's to play while you Nav your way around.
Another plus with the Command unit, is that there is a mini-stereo plug in the right side of the glove box, and I use my iPOD plugged into it and you change your source to AUX in the Nav/Command unit and listen to hours of MP3's running through the car's very fine stereo system. I very seldom use my 6 CD changer in the trunk now days with the Apple iPod; they have them for Windows now too! I can't tell the difference between CD's and MP3's as far as sound either, seeing that they're both 16 bit 44,000 K. The only draw back is that you can't change tunes with the steering wheels controls as with the CD changer, but I don't mind it at all. Makes for some fine cruising tunes on trips.

I first ordered my '03 clk430a with the
standard sound system, and the 6 disc
trunk changer. Fortunately, I changed
the order before the cutoff date for the
Command. This was the best decision; I would have regretted not having the
Command for the rest of the time I owned the car. It looks totally wild, day
or night, too. I use a PJB100, 40 GB,
which is like the ipod, and holds about
900 CD's. The sound through the port
in the glove box is excellent, and doesn't
need to be "converted/translated" by one
of those cassette adaptors, which really
massacre sound (think early 1980's Dolby
switch on car cassette players).
Hope this is useful info for you... Looking
forward to getting my CLK out of storage,
maybe next week if the snow stays away!
