CLK 320
Why am I in limp Mode?

Okay, I bought an 02 clk 320 in january and about a month and a half ago i started having problems. When I try and start the car the engine will not turn. This doesn't happen every time - but more ofen than not. It will usually take 3-4 turns of the key and then the engine will turn. After that point the car runs fine (most of the time). One time when the problem first arose the gear kind of slammed when I went to drive and the car went into limp mode.

I called my mechanic and he said to leave it as long as it's driving correctly. He said it could be any number of things that could cause it, and it could take many hours and alot of cash to diagnose, so not to worry too much if it's driving smoothly. He said if it goes into limp mode again to bring it in. The car actually started normally for about a week, and then the key problem resumed. And now it went into limp mode once again today, along with a check engine notice.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm not mechanically savvy, I'm just trying to get a heads up on what I'm dealing with.

in limp mode, there will be codes stored in the ecu. pull the codes, and you will get your answer.

as for the key turning issue, it's almost like I have a dead battery. It's not like the engine is struggling, it's like I have an ignition problem. But after a few tries it starts right up. So that, and limp mode.... someone give me good news!

You may want to pull your battery and do a load test at the bench. MB's have a threshold voltage for starting. If the battery is at or below that voltage no joy. Other symptoms are loss of sync on windows, sunroof, etc. and false errors like 'bad oil level sensor'.

Limp home mode is designed to protect the transmission and is another issue. As suggested have it scanned with the Star system and find out what's going on.

Good luck.

I am having the same issue (transmission and limp-mode)with my clk320. I pulled the code and it came up with a speed sensor code......I also found tranny fluid in the connector to my TCM so I am going to replace the sensors (2 apparently) and the connector from the tranny, to the TCM. Then I'll have to have the thing re-scanned at an MB shop and hopefully that will fix it. (crosses fingers)

Your adapter plug and conductor plate might be bad on the tranny (this is what I'm currently taking care of)....apparently this is something that should have been fixed on my car WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY before the 200,222 mile mark, lol. The adapter plug o-rings leak and allow fluid to pass the plug, follow the wires, and go right to the connections on the TCM (under the floorboard on the passenger side). If you don't catch it in time, you could blow your TCM. Also, the conductor plate that is in the tranny, above the valve body (just replaced this myself today) goes bad (common problem) and causes the speed sensors not to be read and will throw a code for your speed sensors in the tranny......I wrote the codes down but left the paper in the car, at school.....look at my thread about my '01 clk320 tranny issues and limp mode

Hope that helped you a little.
