Dash disassembley

Hey guys,

I need some help with something. I have a 2001 CLK-430. On my dash, there's a loose bulb somewhere on the speedometer around the 120-160 area. Either way, it looks pretty bad. But, when I tap on the top of the dash it comes right back on. So, I'm assuming it's a loose wire.

Can anyone help me on how I can get behind the cluster so that I can see what the problem is?

Thanks in advance.

The cluster comes out in on piece. If I recall its clipped in and you can just pull it out. Once its out the cluster comes apart easily

well, the bulbs that light up the cluster don't have wires..

if you remove the cluster, you see there are a bunch of bulbs in the back, and they are just twist locked... half a turn to install, half a turn the other way to remove...

it may just be that the bulb is a little lose... and yeah, the cluster is pretty easy to remove..

Can someone give me step by step on how to take it out? I've never done this before.

Thanks.

It's kind of hard to explain. But you try to grab cluster from under the dash and pull towards you. The cluster will come free. Remember to pull the steering wheel out as far as you can. When the dash comes loose there will be a couple of plugs in the back that unplug. from there you should have no problem changing the necessary bulb. Hope this helps

O.K. I just went to my car to try it. You need to put your hands on the sides of the cluster and pull outward. Use the side of the dash for leverage.; It takes a couple good pulls but it will come out. I just did it.

dang, you must be pretty strong or have a real good grip... those things can be pretty tight... i've tried before, but it didn't work...
so, in the end, i just made my own tool using those metal clothes hangers (from the dry cleaners)...

came out much easier...

Post Cluster Tools

You Can Use The MERCEDES Tool for the Cluster (Combi Hooks) 2
or try to push it out from under the dash. after you remove the under dash panel ..The Combi Hooks Work Great!

Used to be a CLK430
You can try a strong suction cup, affix it to the plastic see-through portion and pull.
