No center heat?

I meant to ask this last yr when I first got my 2002 CLK, but I notice that the heat does not come out the center console. Only the sides, top (defroster), and bottom. Is this normal? It does heat up pretty well, but I would like to hold my hands on a cold day in front of the center vent and get some nice hot air. Is it normal or a repair? Thanks!

Instead of using the "auto" function, set the circulation arrows on both sides so that it looks like the arrow is hitting the figure of the person in the chest. Set it that way on both the driver and passenger controls to get the best "hand warming".

Arrow Answer to your heat question

No, heat does not come out of the center vent, only "Fresh Air", this is in the owners manual. BTW I would prefer heated/cooled air from the center vent as well, had that on my 5-series. Also, the philosophy German car companies have is this: Fresh air directed at your upper body will keep you more alert..... my philiosphy, however, is that heated air directed at my upper body will keep me warm.......

Yea...I agree...thanks very much...I should have checked that manual before posting. This just adds one more thing to my (short) list of things that I am not crazy about with the CLK. Thanks again!

I'm not sure where you are reading in the manual but heat does come out of the center console. I just went out to check mine...nice and warm coming out and it's 4 degrees outside my house.

MY 1998 CLK320, No heat from center....

On my car I get no heat from center vents, in the "Quick Tips" guide (a little spiral notecard book) under the "Climate Controls" tab it says in the "Tips" (blue print on bottom) section: "In cold weather center vents receive no air". Maybe newer ones do, maybe I can change that??? I hope.

I believe that Jeff '02 will be able to adjust his by just going to manual mode rather than auto and select the middle arrows(center vents) on both sides.

Ok fellas... where the hot or cool air comes out from...

if your vent control is set to auto, then it depends on the temp settings...

basic physics... hot air rises, so if you desire a warmer temperature, to be efficient and transfer heat throughout the cabin, the warm air is released from the bottom vents. when warm air comes from the windshield, thats because you set it to be, or because its trying to defrost the windshield...

cool air, on the other hand, is dense/heavier... that is why it comes from the vents mounted higher...

and i don't know why the CLK was designed this way, but, you cannot get air to shoot from the FRONT VENTS ONLY.... it MUST share with other vents, i.e., top or bottom... sigh...

while i agree that my right hand gets jealous of my left hand from being able to warm up during cold drives, the HVAC system does a very efficient job of circulating the right temp in the whole cabin... kudos for that...

Check this out

Even though the manual in my MY 1998 CLK320 says hot air will not come through the center vents, it appears (to me at least) that that is only applicable in AUTO mode. In the MANUAL MODE (ie You hit the VENT button to set the vents to dispense heat the way you want) however, I got HOT air coming out tonight. So I guess the manual does not mean everything, 'cause I got heated air to the center vents, like McDonalds: "I'm Lovin' it".

Hey Josh K, check my "seats" post.....

i will add my experience in an '01 CLK...

i noticed my center vent doesnt provide nearly as much hot air as side vents in either auto or manual. nonetheless there is some hot air.

furthermore, my cold air at least last summer worked fine from center vents.

from this i am going to assume my clks operation is consitent with the manual.

***

however ... let me know if i am wrong as i want to fix it if it is broken. btw - my service advisor indicated no heat should come from center but he could be wrong as well.

TIA
