Which Phone? AT&T or Verizon?

My 01 CLK 430 came with a missing handset. How do I know which service provider was programed into my car? I asked the service rep today but he mentioned that the only way to find out is to plug the phone in and see if the system would recognize the phone. Is this the only way? Anyone in the Las Vegas area with a Mercedes Motorola Timeport that I can borrow for a few seconds? Thank you for your time.

The phone itself determines that--not the system. The programming is within the phone and will take any Mercedes timeport. I say this because I have used three different ones with mine, and all worked flawlessly.

Thanks for the info. Most members in here are much knowledgeable than MB's reps.

Yeah I have found that true as well. Most folks here are eager to help as well which is a HUGE help for beginners like me.
I hear, from members of the forum, that you can get the timeport phones pretty regularly off e-bay. Just make sure it's a MB timeport or it won't work.
Glad I could be of help Doc! My list of experiences with CLK's is very limited so I'm glad I had one area where I could return some of the help to someone.

Only problem is the Motorola Timeport is chipped specifically for the MB system. It prevents you from buying any timeport. Verizon obviously is the best service. Good luck!

When i was in the cell phone business, there were 2 models of the Motorola Timeport used on the GTE WIRELESS/Verizon Wirless network. The first one was the Dual Mode CDMA 800MHZ/analog model which had an indiglo screen, and the second model which was the Tri-Mode 1900Mhz/800Mhz CDMA / analog model which had the black screen with the bright green/red numbers. Both phones were exactly the same size, and used the exact same charger, so i'm assuming that either one would work in a MBZ that has the phone kit for a Timeport.

I have a used Verizone Motorola Timeport and it will not work in my car. My understanding is that it have to be chipped/programmed for MBZ in order to work in my CLK.

In order for everything to work correctly in the car, according to MB and my experiences, it has to be a MB Timeport.

Again, it is made specifically for MB. It is chipped differently, although it is verizon service, there is a little chip that is added so it works with the cars system.
