2000 clk320 limp mode UGHHHHHH
So my son was driving my CLK320 and about a mile away the car started bucking and then got stuck in 1st gear. "limp Mode"
Now my problem is no message on the dash . When I drive it I cannot put it in park unless I shut it off . I did notice that he D P R N light or indicator is black no letter.
The last thing I can say is there was a yellow triangle the error light,
So where do I start ? shift plate? shift plate solenoid ? 1 2 3 or 4 ? How do I diagnose this ? aka and have worked on cars I know my why around. I shift plate is na easy job for me , I just don't want to do it for nothing and find out it was something else or a solenoid and not the plate I have head of the happening. Hope some one can help me …….….

Buy a code reader and dump the codes.
You may also want to visually inspect the TCU. If it's oil soaked, the 50 cent o-ring has failed and oil has wicked from the transmission and contaminated it.

I do plan on looking at the connection to the transmission but today I let the car run for 20 minutes after jumping it I shut it off I tried to start it batteries total junk it’s like 14 years old. I think we all know what happens with a dead battery on a Mercedes. I’m gonna take the battery out of my CLK 350 and put it into the CLK 320 and see if that fixes it that illuminates the battery question and then go from there. I just wish we had a better scanning tool available to us that is Affordable. I noticed this morning the ABSESPBAS light was on yesterday it wasn’t if I do scan I don’t come up with any check engine hours let’s see what happens with the battery I’ll update the post in about two hours

OK well like all limp mode scenario is we never get it on the first try! I put in my battery from my other car in the 320 and the ABS ESP BAS lights went out after 45 seconds. The problem still is there and you can't get out of first gear still ,I did notice for some strange reason when I put it on to reverse it slammed into reverse. When I drive the car I can feel the shiftier or module clicking allot never happened before . I know there’s a module in there and I know those can be problems so it’s making me think there’s a problem there ,I don’t know if that’s a clue. What I hate about these limp mode is it can be 12 different things and the end result is to pay someone with the right star diagnostic tools to pinpoint it and that’s what I hate about these cars that we can’t fix them ourselves anymore we need someone to scan it for us to pinpoint and I hate that. Everything we want to buy and check is always $100 the transmission played $100 the ABS module $100 ignition $100 it sucks what I hate about these limp mode is it can be 12 different things and the end result is to pay someone with the right star diagnostic tools to pinpoint it and that’s what I hate about these cars that we can’t fix them ourselves anymore we need someone to scan it for us to pinpoint and I hate that. I have a fixit scanner AND NO CODES?????? I did purchase a real nice one goes real deep into the system that should be here in 4 days. also a helpful side note the display for gear selection is blank , I read that this could be a bad shifter module.
If it is the shiftier module after I replace does it need to be program I would thing NO ..........

Deep diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are not available on the W208 via the OBDII port.
The scanner will need to access the 38 pin diagnostic port and proprietary set of commands.

Hard limp home mode wont go away unless the code is cleared in the TCU by a Star Diagnostic System or Snap-on scanner. some others work too.

I actually did buy a scanner you guys are right on that model car you need a scanner with a special 32 pin attachment I ended up purchasing a Vident I link 400 I’m told it’s a really good better than the other I carsoft ones out there so I’m looking forward to getting my shifter which I purchased for $60 not bad if I’m wrong I don’t really care. I think it will be the shifter because from a lot of posts that I’ve seen when you do not see what year it is in and the gear indicator is blank that’s generally a shifter problem so I’m hoping I’m right I kind of jumped the gun and bought it without going diagnostics but for $60 it’s no big deal.
