Question High milage reliability/tuning concerns...

I am looking at several CLK 320s but want to know if i will be able to do what i want to do with it once i buy it. Anyone know if a 320 engine with 90k+ miles can take performance tuning? Im talking about evosport pulleys, exhaust, intake, Kleeman blower, etc. I would eventually want to do a supercharger of some sort. Are there any issues with reliability around this age? Thanks for the help.

I would suggest you consider a 430.

nah

u can consider a 320 or 430 whatever is in your price range. I have a 320 engine with 104k miles and the only problem i had with the engine is the exhaust manifold gasket. Either engine is reliable, just a matter of preference. The 430 engine is not more reliable than the 320, just a matter of preference. The only adavantage out of the box if you are considering tuning would be the AMG kit standard on the 430.

At 104K miles my engine pulls strong like new on a 320.

one more thing

for a high mileage clk, expect to overhaul the suspension more than the drivetrain components. Im talking about balljoints, bushings, shocks, and stuff like that because you will have problems.

The drivetrain is pretty much worry free.

How would a set of Konis w/ sport springs affect the balljoints, bushings, etc.?

i dont think the konis alone would do much to adversely affect the suspension. Basically, when I take my car home for thanksgiving we're gutting the suspension and replacing EVERYTHING as well as exhaust and head gaskets.

Springs might hurt it if not aligned correctly. I had H&R on NY roads for a while and it handled well, not too hard with stock shocks, but they werent really aligned and I think it really took apart the suspension which is why I have to replace everything.

If you live in a state with real rough roads dont touch H&R's in my opinion. I gotta get myself a pair of Konis tho and soften things up a bit.
